Mumbai, Jan 18 (IANS) Irrfan Khan has been offered a major role in Deepa Mehta's film adaptation of "Midnight's Children". But this means the actor won't be seen playing the lead in the next film by Mira Nair, with whom he did "The Namesake", as the two would be shot at the same time.
Deepa met Irrfan earlier this month and offered him the role in the movie adapted from Salman Rushdie's Booker Prize winning book. Ironically, this happened just about the same time that Mira's offer to Irrfan to play the lead in her prestigious international project "The Reluctant Fundamentalist" fell through.
Apparently Mira had discussed the role of the progressive Pakistan protagonist with Irrfan and had even offered him the script. And even Irrfan too doesn't deny the fact that Mira had offered him the film.
"While shooting with me she did bring it up. But that's it. After that there has been no word from her on it. I hold no grudges about it. What Mira has given me in 'The Namesake' and 'Kosher Vegetarian' is incredible. I enjoyed myself thoroughly doing these two films and I'm sure we'll work together some other time," Irrfan said.
As for the Deepa Mehta's project, Irrfan has apparently given it the green light. Deepa's "Midnight's Children" and Mira's "The Reluctant Fundamentalist", both based on literary works, will commence shooting at around the same time.
"Deepa has given me the script and I'll read it as soon as my first schedule for Sudhir Mishra's 'Homecoming' is over," Irrfan said.
Literary works apart, Irrfan has been into stunts off late - last week he was hanging from a harness from the 18th floor of a building in Delhi in the shivering winter with nothing except track pants and a vest on.
Explaining his precarious mid-air plight, Irrfan said: "It's the introduction scene in Sudhir's film. And here I'm half-naked waiting to be pulled up with strings to the 18th floor. Fortunately I've the physique for it. I developed the build and stamina to try a stunt like this while I was playing the athlete 'Paan Singh Tomar' in my last film."
As for the casting of "The Reluctant Fundamentalist", director Mira said: "It's early days yet. I don't have an idea yet. I start casting in Pakistan first and then make my way to India."

New Delhi, Nov 11 (IANS) Bollywood actors Anil Kapoor and Irrfan Khan will be honoured at the ongoing 33rd Cairo International Film Festival (CIFF) 2009.
The duo will be honoured along with model-turned-actor Arfie Lamba, among the stars of the multiple Oscar-award winning movie "Slumdog Millionaire" at the fest that commenced Tuesday, according to the official website of the film festival.
With India being the special guest of honour at the gala, around 25 Indian movies will be screened during the festival that opened with Yash Raj Films' "New York".
The film, which was screened Tuesday, is also competing in the 'In Competition' section of the festival that closes Nov 20.
Directed by Kabir Khan, the film stars John Abraham, Katrina Kaif, Neil Nitin Mukesh in the lead apart from Irrfan Khan in an important role.
Recently screened at the Pusan International Film Festival, "New York" released in over 900 screens worldwide June 26. It is a contemporary story of three young friends whose lives are turned upside down by post-9/11 prejudices.
The jury of the fest is being headed by Malayalam filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan, Victor Okhai and Nour El Sherif.
Also attending the festival will be Hollywood stars like Samuel L. Jackson, Lucy Liu and Tom Berenger.

After observing Jaideep Sen closely whilst making Koi…Mil Gaya and Krrish, I wanted to give him a break as an independent director and decided that he had the right sensibility and would not go over the top directing Krazzy 4.”
Director Jaideep Sen started his film career as an assistant director with Harry Baweja. He went on to assist Raj Kanwar for six films, worked as associate director with Sunny Deol on film “Dillagi” and joined Film Kraft in 2001 and worked closely with Rakesh Roshan on blockbusters Koi..Mil Gaya and Krrish. So impressed was Rakesh Roshan with Jaideep's dedication and willingness to learn that he entrusted his next film Krazzy 4 into his capable hands.
Jaideep Sen commented: “As I embark on my journey as an independent feature film director with Krazzy 4, I hope I have lived up to the immense faith Mr Roshan has reposed in me. He is a man of such few words that when he doesn't say anything, you have to assume that you have delivered a quality film that matches up to the formidable reputation of Filmkraft and the genius of Rakesh Roshan!”

Cast / Character SketchesJuhi Chawla is Dr Sonali. As a psychiatric she knows what’s wrong with her patients; as a sensitive woman she firmly believes that if you really want to make them well, you should treat them with your heart, not just your mind.
Arshad Warsi is Raja. Truly the angry young man! His blood boils, his fists clench and he’s ready to beat the daylights out of anyone who upsets him in some way.
Irrfan Khan is Dr Mukherjee. He has decided that he’s the Captain of the team! But so obsessed is he by the need to be in control of a situation, he doesn’t realise he’s totally lost control of himself and his mind.
Rajpal Yadav is Gangadhar. He’s marching to a beat only he can hear; he’s fighting for a cause that’s long over. But in his muddled mind he’s still fighting for Swaraj; still hobnobbing with the likes of Nehru and Mahatma Gandhi.
Suresh Menon is Dabboo. Cute and adorable, he’s everybody’s pet and however far gone the rest may be, when it comes to Dabboo, everybody’s super protective. Even if he can hear and understand, Dabboo refuses to speak. And nobody knows why!
Dia Mirza is Shikha. As a TV reporter she controls the news on the channel, but as a woman she’s unable to control the unruly and unmanageable rage of Raja - the man she loves.
Rajat Kapur is Industrialist R K Sanyal, who’s also Dr Sonali’s husband. But in his quest for power and money he takes a step that will have alarming consequences for his wife and her patients – the krazzy 4!
Zaakir Hussain is Srivastav. He is so neck deep in illegal activities that now he’ll stoop to anything – even kidnapping and murder – to keep him ahead.
