Ranbir, Katrina will win National Awards for 'Rajneeti': Prakash Jha
26-Jan-2010

Mumbai, Jan 26 (IANS) Director Prakash Jha is confident that his film "Raajneeti" will fetch the prestigious National Awards for Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif.

"This film will take Ranbir to another level," said Jha. He has cast the actor as US-educated scion of a political dynasty who has to reluctantly return home to shoulder his family's duties.

"I hope, no, I'm in fact pretty certain, he'll win the National Award for his performance," Jha told IANS.

"Katrina has breathed fire and passion into her role. From the way she metamorphoses from a young vivacious girl to the way she walks to give her public speeches as a politician. Audiences won't be able to believe the transformation of Katrina. I won't be surprised if both Ranbir and Katrina win National Awards," he added.

He can't stop preening over the fact that his "Raajneeti" features the maximum number of National Award winners in its cast, Arjun Rampal being the latest.

"Everyone is outstanding in the film. And why not? I've a line-up of National Award winners in the cast - from Naseeruddin Shah and Nana Patekar to Manoj Bajpai and Ajay Devgn.

"When I heard Arjun had won the National Award for 'Rock On!', I was ecstatic. He is fantastic in my film."

Jha claims "Raajneeti" is the biggest multi-starrer. "I think it'd be impossible to get so many stars under one roof for any other director."

Nobody knows Katrina better than me: Salman
20-Jan-2010

New Delhi, Jan 20 (IANS) Salman Khan is fed up of being repeatedly asked about his "Veer" co-star Zarine Khan's resemblance to his lady love Katrina Kaif. The star insists he knows that they don't look like each other at all.

The actor, who appeared on Zee TV's dance reality show "Dance India Dance 2", told the show's grandmaster Mithun Chakraborty: "Dada, the press guys are hell-bent on making me accept that Zarine ('Veer') looks like Katrina and I'm tired of telling them she is not even close to her."

"Nobody knows Katrina better than me and I'm telling you guys, Zarine does not look like Katrina," he added.

Salman thoroughly enjoyed his stay on the sets, said a source.

When the actor saw the male participants lifting the girls high up in the air during their act, he joked: "Guys, now this is something I just cannot do! I may lift really heavy weights, bench press more than most men do but I can never lift a woman that high up in the air."

Releasing Friday, "Veer" is Salman's pet project. Written by the actor himself 20 years ago, the movie is set in colonial India.

I couldn't take my eyes off Katrina Kaif: Zarine Khan
12-Jan-2010

Mumbai, Jan 12 (IANS) Debutante Zarine Khan doesn't mind being compared to her "Veer" co-star Salman Khan's girlfriend Katrina Kaif and says that the actress is so beautiful that even she couldn't take her eyes off.

"Being compared to Katrina Kaif is a huge compliment for me because I feel she is very beautiful. When I am compared to her, I feel overwhelmed. I have met her a couple of times and she is so beautiful that even I couldn't take my eyes off her," Zarine told IANS.

"Being compared to her is always a delight. Personally speaking, when I see myself in the mirror, I find no similarities."

Zarine, who is playing female lead with Salman in "Veer", says that she wanted to be a doctor and that acting happened to her by chance.

"I was always a very brilliant student, but not a nerd type. I wanted to be a doctor. But I couldn't continue my studies due to a financial crisis and the responsibility of my whole family fell on my shoulders. Acting happened by chance. Now I can be everything - a doctor, pilot, everything," said Zarine.

"I was a struggling model and was looking for some kind of work to take care of my family. I was doing very small print ads now and then for saris to earn money to run my house. One day I was home surfing the net when I got a call from Mukta Arts. They called me on the sets of 'Yuvvraaj'. There I met Salman.

"Salman is a huge actor and I am one of his great fans. I started talking to him like his fans would do. I had no clue that he was planning to take me in his film ('Veer'). Finally, when I asked for his autograph, he said, 'No sweetheart you will sign autograph for the world'. Later I got to know that he has selected me for this film," she added.

Though Salman chose Zarine, she had to pass an audition test.

"They had auditioned lots of girls because the female lead has two different looks in the movie - one is Indian and other Western. Whoever they auditioned looked good in either of the looks, not both. Some had language problem too. They tried me and I was lucky enough to fit into both the characters and they signed me," said Zarine.

"Veer" is directed by Anil Sharma and produced by Vijay Dalani and Sunil A. Lulla. The makers kept Zarine's name secret for a long time.

"Even I got strict instructions to keep it a secret from friends and family. I was allowed to give some clue to my parents," she said.

Asked why they were hiding her, she said: "I don't know. I was too junior to question them why they are asking me to do so. I just did what they asked me to do."

Set in colonial India, the film encapsulates a period when Britons enslaved India with their divide and rule policy and kings and nawabs fell for it, except for the Pindaris who preferred death to dishonour and fought till their last breath. Salman plays one of the bravest and strongest Pindari soldiers.

"It's a love story set in the backdrop of a war for independence. I play a Rajasthani princess," said Zarine.

Salman is known as an angry man, but Zarine got to know the caring and understanding side of his personality.

"I had heard that he is a very tough guy, he hardly speaks. But he spoke to me very nicely... may be because I met him first as a fan. In due course I realised whatever has been written about Salman is not true. He is so sweet. He has a heart of gold. He is a very genuine man.

"While shooting sometimes I couldn't understand some parts of my role. I used to be scared that Salman would get angry. But he used to patiently explain how to go about it," said Zarine.

She has already bagged a few offers but she hasn't signed any as she is waiting for the release of "Veer" Jan 22.

I'm painfully unglamorous: Katrina
22-Dec-2009

Mumbai, Dec 22 (IANS) she has given maximum hits in past two years and now Katrina Kaif has been voted the sexiest Asian actress by a Eastern Eye. But she claims that she is just like any other working girl trying to make a living here.

"Me? Hot and sexy? Nah. People should see me at home. I'm painfully unglamorous. Just another working girl making a living," Katrina told IANS.

Commenting on reports about buying new house, she said: "I know, I've been reading about relocating my home. I admit I've looked at a few properties. But nothing seriously.

"Though it's a little noisy on my street I'm too attached to the place I stay in. I'm also too lazy to make a move. Yes, I'll need a bigger place when my sister Isabelle joins me. But right now she's studying acting in the US. There's still time."

So is she planning to move into a new home?

"Not at all. I've always wanted a home by the sea, but I love my current home too much. So no plans of moving," she said.

The actress recently featured in hits "Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani" and "De Dana Dan", but says she has no plans of sign any new films yet.

"It's very sweet of directors to mention my name in forthcoming projects. I feel privileged. But I haven't said yes to anything new. At the moment I've cut my workload by half because of my ill health," said the actress who recently underwent a minor surgery.

There should be a limit to fun, says angry Katrina Kaif
13-Nov-2009

New Delhi, Nov 12 (IANS) Bollywood actress Katrina Kaif is not taking rumours of her marriage with an Indore-based politician in good humour. She says people should have fun, but within limits.

"The police have already issued a statement saying that it is utter rubbish and the police are going to arrest him and serve notice. I hope they do. I agree doing it in fun is one thing but there should be a limit," Katrina told reporters here.

"People shouldn't cross the line. I will definitely support the police' decision to penalise the person," she added.

The news came in effect after a marriage certificate approved by the Indore Municipal Corporation came to surface. It claimed that the 24-year-old is married to local Bharatiya Janata Party member Ramesh Mendola since Dec 2, 2008.

The certificate was also registered with the Indore civic body Dec 11 that year. The local Municipal Corporation however retaliated that the certificate was fake and a complaint will be lodged with the police.

The actress was in the capital to launch Veet's Ready-To-Use Wax Strips. Katrina is the brand ambassador of the brand.

Katrina, who features in recently released hit "Ajab Prem Ki Ghajab Kahani", also insisted: "I'm confident enough to know what I am speaking."

Katrina is inspiring, India's biggest actress: Ranbir Kapoor
01-Nov-2009

New Delhi, Nov 1 (IANS) Bollywood's latest heartthrob Ranbir Kapoor can go on and on about his "Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani" co-star Katrina Kaif. He finds her drive and passion for work inspiring and says she is "the nicest person in the industry".

"The drive that Katrina has is inspiring. She is there and she just doesn't stop. She has come a long way from where she started and where she is today," Ranbir told IANS in an interview here.

"She is India's biggest actress and there is a lot of hard work, sacrifice and passion she has put behind that and I totally respect that. And the best part is that she doesn't take that for granted," the 28-year-old actor said.

Ranbir, who will be seen again with Katrina in Prakash Jha's political thriller "Rajneeti", describes Katrina as the "nicest person in the industry".

"There is an amazing positive energy about her. She is hardworking and everything she does is for the betterment of the movie. She is fun loving, passionate about cinema and passionate about her work. I share a great rapport with her," he said.

His "Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani" is slated for release Nov 6 and shows the story of a happy-go-lucky boy, who falls in love with a girl. But the girl is in love with someone else. The film also has a special appearance by Salman Khan.

Asked about his on-screen chemistry with Katrina, Ranbir said: "As far as chemistry is concerned, I always believe that chemistry never happens between two actors, it happens between two characters in the movie. It depends how the characters are written in the script and the moments and the scenes between them. That's when chemistry happens.

"Katrina and I are working for the first time, so people are finding this pairing new and fresh, but unless the film releases and unless it becomes a hit, you never know whether the chemistry has worked out or not," he said.

Ranbir, son of actors Rishi and Neetu Kapoor, made his acting debut in 2007 with Sanjay Leela's Bhansali's "Saawariya" opposite newcomer Sonam Kapoor. The film failed at the box office, but it didn't deter his growth as he received positive reviews for his performance and got good offers.

Siddharth Anand's romantic comedy "Bachna Ae Haseeno" was his second film and it hit the jackpot at the box office. And now everyone - from critics to audiences - are going ga ga over his performance in "Wake Up Sid", in which he was paired opposite Konkana Sen Sharma.

After "Ajab Prem...", Ranbir will be seen in Shimit Amin's "Rocket Singh: Salesman of The Year", "Rajneeti" and Siddharth Anand's "Anjaana Anjaani".
