Union Home Secretary reviews Coastal Security Scheme

New Delhi, Dec 13 (ANI): Union Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta today reviewed the Coastal Security Scheme (CSS) in a meeting that was attended by nine coastal states and four Union Territories.
The meeting was held to assess the progress of the scheme, which was approved in January 2005.
The states and Union Territories have been requested to complete construction of police stations, check posts, outposts, etc as envisaged under the Scheme.
The states and Union Territories have agreed to provide regular feedback on the progress of implementation in terms of development of the physical infrastructure, equipping of coastal police stations, sanctioning of the recruitment of required police and technical personnel as well as the impact of operationalising the scheme in terms of checking of illegal activities, number of arrests, prosecution of criminal elements, seizure of contraband etc.
The scheme, based on the recommendations of the Group of Ministers on "Reviewing the National Security System", was formulated after consultations with all agencies concerned including the State Governments.
It aims to enhance coastal vigilance by strengthening infrastructure for patrolling and surveillance of coastal areas. (ANI)
