In a reply to the President's address to the joint session of Parliament, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh came heavily on the BJP-led NDA government for the problems faced in the agriculture sector.
Remarking on the loan waiver PM said: "What we have done is nothing more than picking up the unpaid distress bill which the NDA government left behind."
He also made it clear that there was no need to doubt his government's ability on how to raise money to waive off farmers' loans. He assured that his government would make adequate resources from increased tax and non-tax revenue receipts to erase the debts.
During his speech he also referred on the Indo-US nuke deal saying that all efforts would be made possible to seek the "broadest possible consensus" on the issues ans also stressed that the national interest of the country will not be compromised.
