2009 LS elections has been a historic verdict for the Congress and its allies which has taken a clear lead way ahead of its opposition parties.
For the Congress, it has been a remarkable win over the decades, with its prime ministerial candidate Manmohan Singh set to retain the power for the second term as the PM.
Out of the total 543 seats, Congress has emerged as the biggest single party leading in 198 seats. Along with its allies the total tally of UPA is expected to reach 250 a little below the half way mark of 272 which means it does not need the support of Left. The mandate also turned out a major setback for the Left and BJP which performed much below than their expectations.
