Gujjar row turns violent

The ongoing Gujjar agitataion is getting into more trouble as many more killings are reported as the protesting Gujjar supporters clased with the police in Haryana.

Many had been injured and an elderly man is said to have died at the stampede following the incident while police started firing against the Gujjars agitating on their demand for the quota issue.

Police had resorted to firing after use of tear gas shells and a lathicharge failed to calm the violent protesters who set on fire a Haryana Roadways bus, said as enior police official. With tension building over, security has been heigtened at various parts of the agitation.

IPL set for gala finals over weekend

The final four of the IPL is getting ready for the semi final and final clashes over the weekend. The first Semi final clash is between Virender Sehwag's Delhi Dare Devils' and Shane Warne's Rajasthan Royals' on Friday at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai.

With  IPL excitement at its prime, cricket lovers can watchout for a thrilling weekend over the next 3 days. The other teams heading for the semis are Chennai team captained by Dhoni and Yuvaraj Singh's Team Mohali. The second semifinal is sceduled on Saturday.

The finals will be hosted on Sunday at D.Y. Patil Stadium in Mumbai. With so far the Twenty 20 tournament finally reaching its final stages the BCCI owned IPL is defenitly termed as a success by its organisers.

UPA-Left meet delayed to June

UPA-Left nuke panel meeting scheduled for this week has been postponed to June.The meeting is now expected to take place later on June 11.

External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee who is also the Committee's convenor has said that the meeting was deferred due to unavailability of some members of the panel.

The Left parties had been wanting to ask the government to finalise the safeguards agreement with IAEA only after the 123 agreement with the US lapses.

Gujjar stir continues

With the Gujjar community in Rajastan going on with the 4th day of agitation, Rajasthan Government is under pressure to resolve the situation.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje had sought Prime Minister's intervention on the matter requesting Center for recommendation on the Gujjar's issue.

The CM is said to have Centre recommended a special 4-6 per cent quota for the Gujjars above the existing Scheduled Tribe quota.

New LPG connections to get dearer

Now on consumers have to shell out more on new cooking gas LPG connections. The security deposit for new LPG connections have been hiked from Rs 850 to Rs 1250.

The rise in steel prices has been cited as the reason behind the hike. The price of gas regulator has also been raised to Rs 150 from the exisiting Rs 100.

This applies to major LPG brands including Indane, Bharat Gas and Hindusan Petroleum's HP Gas.

Move for hike in fuel prices

Another hike in fuel prices are on the move with the cabinet meeting held to discuss on possible measures to resolve the issues of the public sector oil companies.
With rising international fuel prices the government is forced to take immediete steps to tackle the problems of the oil companies. However any fuel price hike is strongly being opposed by the Left and opposition parties.
"Government knows our stand. There is no question of accepting any fuel price hike," maintained CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat.

Inflation to fall down by Sept: Ahluwalia

Inspite of concerns over the fuelling inflation levels, Planning Commission Deputy Chairman remained hopeful saying that the country would witness  considerable fall down in the inflation levels by August-September.

"Given a certain amount of patience, inflation will come down in 3-4 months significantly," said Montek Singh Ahluwalia while addressing reporters during the sidelines of a function.

Even the government taking all fiscal measures to contain the spiralling price rises of commodities, infaltion stood at a 44-month high of 7.83 per cent for the week ended May 3.

Harbhajan receives maximum punishment

Harbhajan Singh today got a five-match ODI ban for slapping Sreesanth but was warned by the Cricket Board of a life ban for any further misconduct on his part.

Sudhir Nanavati submitted a 14-page report to the BCCI's Disciplinary Committee who acted then to impose the ban on the spinner who will now miss the forthcoming tri-series in Bangladesh and two matches of the Asia Cup in Pakistan.

"The Committee accordingly decided to ban Harbhajan Singh for five one-day internationals, starting today and further observed that any further instance of misconduct will invoke a life-ban," the BCCI said in a statement after the committee's hearing.

"The Committee invoked Rule 3.2.1 of the BCCI Regulations for Players, Team officials, Managers, Umpires and Administrators. Under this provision, the maximum punishment that can be meted out to a player is a ban up to a maximum of 5 ODIs and/or 3 Test matches," Pawar told reporters.

I am still hopeful of N-deal: PM

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday said he was still hopeful of the deal.

"I am hopeful so long as we are discussing it,"  Singh said "I hope good sense will prevail."  

"I am negotiating in good faith," the Prime Minister told reporters on the sidelines of a military investiture at the Rashtrapati Bhavan here.

His remarks came in the midst of government's renewed bid to enlist the support of Left parties, for going ahead with securing the India-specific safeguards agreement with the IAEA.

CPI(M) blames Centre for price rise

Madurai, May 7 (PTI) Blaming the Centre solely for the spiralling price rise, the CPI-M today asked the UPA government to restore the original allocation of foodgrains for all the states to help them control prices.

Party General Secretary Prakash Karat said essential commodities, through the Public Distribution system, should be given to all the people instead of the targetted sections.

The Centre had also failed to procure adequate quantity of foodgrains from the farmers, he told reporters here.

The state government's role with regard to control of prices was restricted to strengthening the PDS. But for this the Centre should help, he said.
