IT returns: No extension of dates

Government has made it clear that there would be no extension of the last date for filing of income tax returns. "There is no proposal to extend the last date for filing returns by individual tax payers beyond July 31," said a senior official. The facility for filing Income tax returns can also be done online from the government's IT department website. One can easily do the e-filing process at anytime anywhere without visiting the IT office. So far over 10 lakh e-returns have been made ,claims the Finance dept. --MP
India, Pak opens fire at LoC

Indian and Pakistani troops exchanged fire across the Line of Control at the Kashmir border which was triggered following arguments between the two sides. India has said that atleast 10 Pakistani soldiers has crossed the LoC at the Kupwara sector of North Kashmir and engaged in war of words with the Indian side. An Indian soldier was killed during the incident. This has led to the gun battle which was later stopped. --MP
BJP campaign against govt

BJP is to launch a country wide agitation to campaign on the various issues including the cash for vote incident that rocked the Parliament over the trust vote.
The party will organise nationwide protests starting July 27th to August 2 which will be lanched by the party senior leader and its prime ministeriel candidate L K Advani. ''BJP is launching a nation-wide anti-corruption campaign against the Congress and the UPA government from tomorrow,'' said BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi. --MP
Cash for vote: LS panel to probe
Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee has set up a 7 member panel to inquire into the alleged cash for vote scam levelled by the 3 BJP MP's.
The three men had brought bundles of currency notes to the floor of the House and had claimed that they were offered to them as bribe by an SP leader. The inquiry panel headed by senior Congress member V Kishore Chandra Deo will have members like V K Malhotra (BJP), Mohd Saleem (CPI-M), Ram Gopal Yadav (SP), Devendra Prasad Yadav (RJD), Rajesh Verma (BSP) and C Kuppusamy (DMK). --MP
High alert across country

India's capital city Delhi has been put on high alert in the wake of multiple blasts across the country. Security has been heightened since Friday's Bangalore attacks.
Additional forces has been deployed to crowded places like airport, railway station, ISBTs, markets and shopping complexes to ensure people's safety. ''The capital is on high alert since yesterday. We request people to be cautious and request them not to panic,'' said Delhi police. Following today's Ahmedabad terror strikes high alert has also been sounded across various states including Punjab, Haryana and Madhya Pradesh. --MP
Murali pins down Indian side

Faced with a massive score to chase (600 runs in the first innings), the Indian batting side succumbed to pressure with Sri Lanka's ace spinner Muttaiah Muralidharan doing most of the damage at the first Test played between India and Sri Lanka in Colombo. At the end of day 3 India were 159/6, trailing behind by 441 runs with bad lights stopping the play.

The trust vote win in the Parliament by the UPA government was welcomed by the industry as well with markets gaining momentum during the trading session. Various industry bodies cheered the government's convincing victory on hope that the political stability would bring in more economic reforms over the coming days. UPA wins trust vote

It was a clear win for UPA as the government came out winning the trust vote with a pretty margin in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.
When the final votes were counted, UPA came with clear lead with 275 voted in favor of the government while 256 against the government. There were 10 abstentions. Earlier there were many disruptions in the Parliament amid MPs allegations of cash for vote. The Lok Sabha was adjourned and Speaker then put the confidence motion to vote after an all party meeting. --MP

After much work out, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha(JMM) has finally decided to vote in favour of the UPA government during the July 22nd confidence motion in the Paliament. "All the five MPs of the party will vote in favour of the UPA Government during the trust vote," said JMM chief Shibu Soren after he met with Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi on Sunday. It is learnt that the Congress in turn has agreed to bring back Soren in the Union Cabinet as Coal Minister and his party member is also promised a State ministerial berth.
Meanwhile RLD chief Ajit Singh who has 3 MPs members and JD(s) chief Deve Gowda has declared that their respective parties would vote against the government during the trust vote. --MP

With just 2 days to go for the confidence motion in Parliament, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha chief Sibhu Soren is yet to decide on the party's stand in the crucial trust vote.
The party has 5 LS members and the party's stance will be critical to the UPA government as each vote is important for the government's survival. A decision on this regard is expected on Sunday as a meeting is scheduled by the JMM to finalise on the issue. India to brief IAEA on N deal

Going a step further on the ambitious nuclear deal, India's top officials would brief the IAEA board members and the NSG nations on the safeguards pact for inspections at India's nuclear facilities.
The Indian delgation including Foreign Secretary Shiv Shankar Menon would meet the IAEA board and explain on the safeguards agreement to the representatives of IAEA and NSG in Vienna on Friday. In this crucial meeting ahead of the Aug 1 vote on the safeguards pact, representatives of 35 countries are taking part. --MP

Even when Left parties are keen on LS speaker Somantah Chatterjee's step down from the post, Chatterjee remains firm on his stand and refuses to quit.
The CPM member has been defiant and has openly expressed his displeasure over his party going along with the communal BJP for the trust vote. Even after repeated attempts by the CPM leaders putting on pressure to quit, Mr Chatterjee had not made his intentions clear. India objects attack on Iran

With Israel threatening attack on Iran, India has strongly objected to any military action on that country.
"India is gravely concerned at these statements threatening use of military force against Iran. India is against any such military attack, which constitutes unacceptable international behavior. UPA, opposition set for number game

With the trust vote scheduled for July 22nd, UPA and Left parties are all fighting it out for the crucial number game. While SP has joined with UPA on the Indo-US nuclear deal, Mayawati's BSP is joining sides with Left opposing on the deal. "Mayawati reiterated her opposition to the deal. It was decided that there should be cooperation to stop the deal and in the struggle against the UPA government in this regard," said Karat after meeting the BSP supremo. In the 543-member House, UPA needs at least 272 seats to prove a majority.
At present UPA has 224 seats plus SP's support of 39 MPs, would make it to 263. UPA's survival is now counted on other regional parties. --MP
PM keen on early trust vote

In the wake of the Left's withdrawal of support to the government, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has met President Prathibha Patil and informed that he and his cabinet colleagues were ready to seek a vote of confidence as early as possible. The exact date for the trust vote will be known only after the crucial meeting of the UPA allies and the Cong Working Committee which will take place on Friday. However sources indicate that the trust vote would be held anytime during next week around July 22. In view with the political developments, Congress had earlier requested its coalition MPs to be in Delhi by July 22. --MP
India submits draft to IAEA

In a significant step towards the Indo-US nuclear deal, the Indian government has submitted the draft on the India specific nuclear safeguards agreement to the IAEA.
Indian government has also requested the IAEA to circulate the draft text to the members of the IAEA Board of Governors for their consideration. India now need to wait for the 35- nation board's approval of the safeguard agreement after which it has to get clearance from the Nuclear Suppliers Group. --MP
G8 supports nuke deal

The G8 nations came in support of the nuke deal calling upon IAEA, NSG and associated partners to advance India's non-proliferation commitments and progress so as to facilitate a more robust approach to civil nuclear cooperation with India to help it meet its growing energy needs. Earlier Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh met with the US President George Bush to discuss on the progress on the Indo-US nuclear deal on the sidelines of the G-8 summit.

J & K heads for Governor's rule

With Chief Minister Gulam Nabi Azad resigning on Monday, Jammu and Kashmir is heading towards Governor's rule.
Azad had resigned following PDP's pull out from his government over the controversial desicion on land transfer to the Amarnath shrine board. This has reduced the government to a minority. However Azad opted not to prove majority as he was faling short of enough numbers. The dissolution of Assembly and eventually Governor's rule comes ahead of the next assembly elections which is due in three months. --MP
Leaders condemn Indian embassy bombing
World leaders condemned the suicide attack bombing outside the Indian embassy in Kabul that killed atleast 41 peole inclding 4 Indian nationals. The attack took place on Monday when a bomber with his car carrying expolsives rammed into the embassy gates. The victims include 5 embassy staffs including Defence Attache Brigadier R D Mehta and Counsellor Venkateswara Rao.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh who is away in Japan for the G8 summit strongly condemned the terrorist attack. International community including China and UN Security council strongly denounced the terrorist attack on the Indian embassy and called on for increased cooperation to combat terrorism. --MP

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday left for Japan to attend the G-8 summit in Japan. During his 3 day visit, Mr Singh would meet world leaders from various countries.
He would also meet US President George W Bush on the sidelines of the meet and is expected to discuss further on the Indo-US nuclear deal. Ahead of his visit he said he would address various concerns on global issues including climate change and energy security issues. "I will, in particular, highlight the impact of the sharp rise in fuel prices on the global economy and the need for joint action by both producing and consuming nations,"he said. --MP
Govt rejects Left's deadline

While Left parties has set July seven as deadline, the government has rejected the Left's deadline to clarify its position on whether it was going ahead with the deal.
This comes after SP leaders coming forward with support for the Indo-US nuclear deal. Reacting to the Left's claim, Congress spokesperson Singhi has said that sovereign governments or political parties cannot be subjected to deadlines. "We are working towards triple objectives—to do a nuclear deal in national interest, to carry along our allies with us for that purpose and to go to elections as per the constitutional schedule," he added. --MP
SP gets Kalam's backing on N-deal

After seeking former President A P J Abdul Kalam's opinion on the controversial Indo-US nuke deal, SP leaders seem to be convinced to support the deal.
"Kalam has advised us and on that basis I can say that this deal is in the interest of the country," said SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav after meeting Kalam in New Delhi. With SP endorsing the deal, UPA government can hope to sail the government through even if Left withdraws its support to the UPA.
SP leader Mulayam Singh Yadav is likely to meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Sonia Gandhi today after which a decision on the new alliance will be known. --MP

After an hour long discussion with National Security Advisor M K Narayanan on the nuke deal, Samajwad Party leader Amar Singh had said that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh need to clarify the concerns regarding the Indo-US nuclear deal after which his party would reveal its stance on the deal. "Till now, the Left has been briefing us on the deal, saying it was against national interest, so we have sought clarifications from the PM," he said.
This comes in the wake of speculations that the Left parties would withdraw support to the UPA government, coinciding with PM's visit to the G8 summit which the Left claimed as a signal towards the govt going ahead with the nuke deal. --MP

With the Congress led UPA government determined to go ahead with the Indo-US nuke deal, Left parties had said they are discussing on the timings as to when to withdraw their support to the government. The Left parties move came in as Prime Minister is expected to attend the G-8 summit on July 7th which according to tem is an indication that the government will approach the Board of Governors of the IAEA for the approval of the India-specific safeguards agreement.
