Probe into Kandhmal crisis

In the midst of communal violence still contuning in Kandhamal, Orissa government has ordered a probe into the incident that killed atleast 14 people.

The violence erupted a week ago with the killing of the VHP leader Laxmanananda Saraswati. Even on Saturday the situation remained grim and tension prevailed at many of the villages in Phulbani, Baliguda, Tumudibandha, Barkhama, Raikia, G.Udaygiri, Daringbadi and Tikabali areas. As many as 24 houses were torchered, says police.

Security has been heightened and more security personnel deployed at remote areas of the tribal district on the wake of fresh violence.

India clinch ODI series in Lanka

Winning the fourth ODI against Sri lanka, India has clinched the ODI series in Srilanka with a lead of 3-1 in the 5 match series.

India who played their 4th ODI at the Premadasa stadium in Colombo on Wednesday made a commendable victory by 46 runs.

India who batted first set a target of 258 when they were all out in 49.4 overs. India's top scorrers were Suresh Raina at 76, M S Dhoni 71, Virat Kohli 54.

India put up a tough fight wrapping up the series when the hosts Sri Lankans were bowled out for 212.

Shibu Soren sworn in as Jharkand CM

Backed with the support of UPA constituents, Congress and RJD, President of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), Shibu Soren on Wednesday has sworn in as Chief Minister of Jharkhand.

Soren was called to form the new government after Madhu Koda stepped down as the CM. Besides Soren, 11 others including 3 JMM leaders and 3 independent MLAs also took the oath during the ceremony.

Soren who has sworn in as the 6th Chief Minister of Jharkhand  will  now need to prove his majority in the Assembly on September 1.

Cricket: India take 2-1 lead

India won the third one dayer played against Srilanka in Colombo on Sunday taking a 2-1 lead in the 5 match ODI series. Batting first India took 237 runs with skipper Dhoni being the topscorrer with 76 runs.

In return the Lankan side which was backed with Lankan captain Jayawardhane's brilliant knock of 94 runs, however fell short of 33 runs to reach the target.

Indian bowlers Zaheer and Munaf Patel took 3 wickets each.

India face hurdles at NSG

The 2 day NSG meet in Vienna has come to an end with some of the member nations of the Nuclear Supplies Group objecting to give India a clean and unconditional exception with regard to the Indo-US nuclear deal.

These countries had expressed their concerns claiming that nuclear deal would bring India into the non-proliferation regime and had asked for changes in the waiver draft.

With this turn of events, US has indicated that it might have to accept some changes in the language of the draft and present it to NSG during the meeting scheduled for early September.

NSG meet: India stays positive

Amid mixed responses from NSG countries that met at the Nuclear
Suppliers Group meeting in Vienna, India remained positive on getting
a waiver.

Atleast 3 countries of the 45 nation group has raised questions over
the civil nuclear trade during the initial talks that went on
Thursday.

However the Indian government is hopeful and has held a special
briefing for all of the member nations regarding its commitment to
non-proliferation and seeking to allay concerns that other nations
have.

2 more Olympic medals for India

It was a good day for India on Wednesday as India staged its ever successful Olympics tour with two more medals coming on its way.

India's freestyle wrestler from Delhi, Sushil Kumar won a bronze medal in the 66kg category.

The other good news is that boxer Vijender Singh beating Carlos Gongora of Ecudor has entered the semi finals stage which makes him assured of a medal. In the boxing event, even the losing semi finalists are awarded bronze medals. Vijender will take on the semi finals on Friday.

Koda to face trust vote on Aug25

Jharkhand Chief Minister Madhu Koda who was left to a minority government after JMM's pull out will be seeking trust vote in Assembly on August 25th.

While Koda said he was confident of winning the trust vote, JMM leader Shibu Soren claimed that he had enough support of others to bring down the coalition government.

Koda needs a total of 41 votes in favor to prove the majority during the trust vote in the 82-member House.

Anju fail to qualify for finals

In another disappointment for Indian Olympics team, India's ace long jumper Anju Bobby George failed to qualify for the finals of women's long jump event Which took on Tuesday morning at Beijing.

Much to the disappointment, Anju fouled all of the three consecutive jumps crashing out of the qualification stage.

The Indian athlete's personal best was 6.83 m at the 2004 Olympic Games at Athens. However she was at the sixth position and didnt win any medal.

Koda govt on crisis

The fate of Madhu Koda headed Jharkhand government is in crisis as Shibu Soren's JMM threatening to pull out support to the government.

JMM has 17 MLAs and its withdrawal of support has left Koda govt to a minority. "We have taken the decision to withdraw the support from the state government," informed JMM general secretary Hemlal.

The decision on withdrawal of support comes in view of Soren's demand for Chief Ministership of Jharkhand. JMM had played a crucial role during the UPA government's trust vote.

Moon mission likely this year: PM

Speaking on the occasion of India's 62nd Independence day
celebrations, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said that India would
launch its unmanned moon mission programme likely this year.

"This year we hope to send an Indian spacecraft, Chandrayan, to the
moon. It will be an important milestone in the development of our
space programme," said Mr Singh during his address to the nation from
Red Fort.

India's first mission of its kind to the moon to be launched by the
Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle is being developed by the ISRO and is
planned for October.

GDP projected to 7.7pc

From last year's economic growth of 9 percent, the country's GDP is projected down to 7.7percent.

The Prime Minister's economic advisory council on presenting the economic outlook has said that the inflation attributed to rising oil and food prices has lead to the slow down in the growth.

India's agriculture, industry and services sectors are mainly witnessing a lowered growth. However despite the slowdown in economic growth, India still remain as the second highest growing economy in the world.

SBI hike deposit rates

Following RBI's hike in repo rates, State Bank of India(SBI) has again hiked its prime lending rates(PLR)rates by 100 basis points and interests rates on fixed deposits up by 75 basis points.

The PLR rates has been hiked to 13.75 percent from 12.75 with immedite effect. The FD interest rates has been revised as follows will come into effect from 16th of August.

For 91-180 days, interests revised to 7.5% from 7%. For 181 days-less than 1 year revised to 8.5pc from 8 pc. For 1 year to less than 2 years 10pc from 9.5 pc. while 3 years to less than 5 years raised to 9.75pc from 9pc.

Bindra showered with rewards

Monday was a historic day for Indian sport as ace Indian shooter Abhinav Bindra bagged the gold medal in the 10M air rifle event at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. This is India's first ever gold medal in indivudal events in the history of Olympics games.

Congragulating the 25 year old old on his emphatic win, leaders including President and Prime Minister greeted Mr. Bindra for making the nation proud.

Meanwhile cash rewards total of over Rs 1.8 crore are being pitched in on the Olympic champion for his historic win.

This includes rewards announced by various State governments including Punjab government's reward of Rs 1 crore, Haryana governments cash reward of Rs 25 lakh, BCCI's reward of Rs 25 lakh.

Left keen for Third Front

After parting ways from the Congress led UPA government, the Left parties are keen to form a Third Front ahead of the next year's LS elections.

"Our party is trying to form a Third Front to provide an alternative to both UPA and NDA to the nation before the Lok sabha polls," said Left leader Sitaram Yechuri on Sunday.

However Left party leaders chose to stay away from the question of whether they would project BSP supremo Mayawati as their prime ministerial candidate.

Amarnath issue: Jammu stir till Aug 14

The ongoing stir in Jammu and Kashmir over the land transfer to the Amarnath Shrine Board is to continue for another week. Jammu will continue to remain shutdown till August 14th over the issue, according to Shri Amarnath Sangharsh Samiti (SASS).

The decision to continue the protest is seen as a signal to the Center government on its slow stance in handling the land transfer allocation of forest land to the Amarnath Shrine Board.

Meanwhile an all party delegation led by Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil is expected to be reach Jammu on Sunday to hold talks and come out with a solution for the ongoing agitation.

Khel Ratna for Dhoni

The country's highest honor in the category of sports, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna has been conferred upon Indian cricketer and skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni for the year 2007-08. 

Each year Khel Ratna has been conferred to sportsperson for their outstanding achievements in sports.

So far Sachin Tendulkar is the only cricketer who has been chosen for this prestigious award among the sports discipline- cricket.

Naina Devi tragedy: Probe ordered

An inquiry has been ordered by the Himachal Pradesh government to look into the tragic stampede that killed 146 people in Bilaspur during the pilgrimage to Naina Devi shrine. 

Himachel Chief Minister has also stated that it would adopt the 'Vaishno Devi' model to manage crowds during such religious gatherings. The prime places across the State of pilgrim importance would be made to follow the 'Vaishno Devi' model under which the devotees are allowed to proceed in batches only after their registration.

However the CM had rejected the Opposition parties demand for a judicial probe into the incident.

India wins 2nd Test

India made a commendable win against Srilanka with a margin of 170 runs on the second Test held at Galle International stadium on Sunday.

With the victory India has levelled the thre Test series aginst Sri Lanka. Chasing a target of 307  the Srilanans were bowled out for 136 runs and a day to spare. 

India's Virender Sehwag who spearheaded the Indian batting with a double hundred(not out) and 50 was declared the man of the match. 

Bowler Ishant Sharma was the other hero who picked 3 crucial wickets for the loss of 20 runs.

N deal gets IAEA nod

In a significant step towards India's nuclear deal with US,the Board of Governors of the IAEA has given nod to India specific safeguards agrrement.

 India now has to get the waiver from the 45 member Nuclear Suppliers Group(NSG) afterwhich it needs the approval of the US Congress for implementaing the deal.

"I am hopeful that NSG will appreciate India's position and go ahead with the clean waiver," said chief of  India's Atomic Energy Commission Anil Kakodkar ahead of the NSG meet which is likely to meet around August 21st in Vienna.

Inflation at 11.98pc

With prices of food and manufactured products going up, country's
annual inflation has climbed to 11.98 per cent for the week ended July
19.

This is against the last year's corresponding inflation level at
4.65pc. The country has been witnessing a steady rise in the inflation
levels ever since the hike in fuel prices.

However the RBI had raised the repo and CRR rates rates recently to
contain inflation whose impact will be known only after a few weeks.
