No joint manifesto: Cong

The Congress party has clearly indicated that it would go to the LS elections on its own rather than allying with the existing UPA partners.

Any future alliance would be made only after elections and not before at the national level, stated Congress Working Committee, party general secretary.

However at the state level, alliance could be formed based on discussions with parties of similar interest. This however has created distress among the UPA allies like NCP who has threatened that the Congress move could weaken the party itself.

Petrol, diesel cut by Rs 5, Rs 2

The Union governement has announced to cut the prices of petrol by Rs 5, diesel by Rs 2 and domestic cooking gas by Rs 25 respectively.

The decision on this regard came on Wednesday night after a long meeting by the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs. The new prices had come in effect from Wednesday midnight.

The slashes in fuel prices comes in the wake of fall in the international oil prices.

Sathrughan Sinha to contest from Patna Saheb

Now after the Kalyan Singh incident, BJP do not want to take any risks with its well known politicians. With BJP's Central Election Committee meeting for its candidate shortlisting, the party wants to give a clear indication that it respects its candidates preferences.

Former Union Minister and Bollywood actor Shatrughan Sinha  popularly known as known as Shotgun is learnt to be contesting from the Patna Saheb constitency for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections under the BJP ticket.

The actor turned politician from Bihar has always insisted of contesting from the constitency which is also his birth place.

Osteoporosis on a rise among youth

An alarming number of youth are now suffering osteoporosis which is a disease affecting the bones.

A major part of this is caused due to improper calcium intake which can lead to lesser peak bone mass whicheventually increases the risks for osteoporosis in later life.

Though elderly wonen are at higher risk of osteoporosis, recent studies shows that the disorder is now pervalant in the younger population  below the age of 20 years.

Youths are at present at a higher risk of this bone weakening disease due to sedentary lifestyle and lack of exercise.

Padma Vibhushan for ISRO chief

ISRO chief Madhavan Nair who spearheaded India's first moon mission project, have been nominated for the country's second highest civilian honor, Padma Vibhushan award.

Also Atomic Energy Commission chairman Anil Kakodkar, eminent environmentalist Sunderlal Bahuguna, industrialist Ashok S Ganguly, etc.

Shooter Abhinav Bindra(Padma bhushan) cricketers M S Dhoni, Harbhajan Singh and billiards player Pankaj Advani, film stars Akshay Kumar, Aishwarya Rai are the other prominent Padma awardees this year.--MP

Partial solar eclipse on Jan 26

A partial solar eclipse would be witnessed in parts of the country on January 26th as the moon covers a portion of the sun. The eclipse which will start at 10.27 am IST will however be visible in India only after noon between 2:30 and 3: 30pm.

The eclipse will be visible only from southern parts of India, eastern coast, most of northeast India, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep.

However the northern and western parts of India will not be able to witness the celestial event.

PM discharged after angiography

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh who underwent angiography at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences(AIIMS) on Wednesday has been discharged from the hospital on Thursday morning.

The PM had to undergo the test as a part of heart related and overall medical examinations. The hospital sources has said that the 76 year old Mr Singh was admitted to AIIMS following complaints of chest pain.

Lawyer Preeta Bansal in Obama team

Indian-American lawyer Preeta Bansal has been appointed as the General Counsel and Senior Policy Advisor in the Office of Management and Budget in new US President Barack Obama's team.

The leading lawyer who is currently involved with several law firms in the New York, has also been in the chair of the US Commission on International Religious Freedom.

This Harvard educated lawyer was mentioned as a possible Solicitor General in the Barack Obama Administration

Chandrayaan-1 sends more moon pics

India's maiden moon mission Chandrayan-1 is operating normally, confirms ISRO.

The mission is currently underway with the mapping of the moon's surface which involves search into the cold and dark areas of the moon. 

The space craft has lately send the pictures of the inside craters of the moon via a Mini-SAR instrument. The ongoing expedition is expected to take another 18 months.

Jkand heading for Prez rule

With the Congress yet to reach on a consensus in Jharkhand, the State is most likely to come under President's rule.

After Shibu Soren's defeat and following resignation, the JMM has not come up with any leader who is equally acceptable by all of the UPA allies.

The JMM has suggested the name of Champai Soren as the new CM however his name is not unanimously supported by the UPA. With JMM proposing no alternate name and being adamant on their stand, Governor Syed Sibtey Razi has written to the President on this regard.

After CM Shibu Soren's defeat in Jharkhand's Tamar assembly constituency, the state's political scenerio is uncertain over these
days.

In the wake of the new political instability, Congress has assured that it would come out with a solution in a couple of days time.

The defeat was almost a surprise blow to the UPA alliance however Congress may lookout for a suitable replacement after discussions with all key parties and has maintained that it would come out with a alternative in resolving the current scenario in the State.

Fuel price cut likely

A cut in the fuel prices inclduing that of petrol, diesel and LPG is on the cards as the Cabinet is expected to meet together to discuss on this regard.

A price cut of petrol by Rs 5 and diesel by Rs 3 per litre and domestic LPG by Rs 25 per cylinder is likely, says a petroleum ministry official.

This comes in the wake of decreased inflation levels and drop in international fuel prices. The government is also expected to take measures to cope with the additional revenue demands this will bring in.

Satyam face charges

Following confessions by its former Chairman, the IT major Satyam Computers crisis had a major setback to India's corporate world itself. The IT firm which revealed of over Rs 7000 crore fraud is now facing charges in seperate lawsuits filed against it.

This includes US law firms which has filed class action lawsuits on behalf of the Satyam's share holders.

 The Indian government also has maintained that it would take stern action to deal with the corporate fraud on the wake of Satyam crisis. The move would also see certain amendments to the Companies Act to prevent such fraud practices in the Corporate sector.

Fuel stalemate continues

With the Indian petroleum majors entering into a third day strike,  fuel pumps across the country turned out to be queued up with vehicle owners fearing of fuel shortage.

However the Thursday's meeting between the Petroleum Ministry and the oil companies has failed with the oil firms demanding on an immediate pay hike. Meanwhile Petroleum Minister Murli Deora is expected to meet Prime Minister on Friday to discuss on the issues relating to the situation.

 While Indian Oil and Bharat Petroleum are on with the stir, Hindustan Petroleum is working as normal and having additional demands due to the strike.

India shares evidence with Pak

India has handed over all the evidence found so far in connection with the 26/11 Mumbai attacks to Pakistan.

Indian government on sharing the information with Pak's Foreign Office also expressed hope that Pakistan government cooperate in further investigations.

He also maintained that Pakistan was obliged to extradite the Mumbai attackers. "We want the perpetrators to be brought to Indian justice," said Foreign secretary.

Chidambaram to visit US

Even as Pakistan continue with its denial on terror links, India is all set to present the international community with more evidence to support its claim on terror threats rooting from its neighbouring country.

India in its effort to increase diplomatic offensive, Home Minister P. Chidambaram will be visiting United States next week where he would hold discussions with top officials and brief on India's security situation and share the evidence collected by Indian intelligence agencies on the 26/ 11 Mumbai attacks.

ISRO weather satellite by year end

ISRO which is riding high after its successful Chandrayaan project is on another mission to launch a weather satellite.

 The weather satellite 'Mehga Tropiques'  jointly developed by the Indian and French space agency intends to study tropical weather patterns and other climate and weather related aspects including that of cyclones,clouds, mansoons etc.

The project is planned to be launched towards the 2009 year end.

BSNL's IPTV unveiled in Haryana

Marking with the new year, BSNL has unveiled its Internet Protocol Television(IPTV) services in Haryana. BSNL in its initial phase has
launched these services in Gurgaon, Faridabad and Ambala and plans to extend the same to other parts of the State.

With this viewers will be able to watch thie favorite TV  programms via Internet protocol over a broadband connection  rather than using traditional TV antennas, cable boxes and satellite dishes. BSNL with the IPTV service in place plans to add three million broadband connections every year.

Pak must act: Defence Minister

Pressing more on Pakistan, India's Defence Minister  has maintained that Pakistan should act stongly in bringing down those invoved in the Mumbai terror attacks.

Earlier India has stated that Pakistan should act based on the proof brought out by the US Federal Agency who is conducting investigations there and is learnt to have shared evidence supporting LeT's link to the terror strikes.
