PM aims 10% GDP in upcoming years Wednesday, November 30, 2005 | MP
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh asserted that the government would take on steps to help the economy achieve a target of 10% GDP growth over the next 2-3 years. The government would explore on opening up foreign direct investments (FDI) in the area of retail sector. He maintained that the country’s poor infrastructure was hindering the investment flow. Dr Singh said that India was likely to achieve 7.5 % growth in the financial year but at the same time hoped that the country would achieve a target of 10% growth rate in 2-3 years which he considered would be feasible.
Free HIV/AIDS testing in Delhi campuses Tuesday, November 29, 2005 | MP
In an effort to create AIDS awareness among the youth, the Delhi State AIDS Control Society (DSACS) has come up with a programme for students where free AIDS/HIV counselling and testing are made available in the University campuses itself. Students can make avail of this facility which would help them cope with an early diagnose of the AIDS/HIV virus, if any. Incidentally DSACS reports reveal that 35% of the AIDS cases are found in the age group between 15 - 29 years, while 45% are in the middle age group of 30-49 years. The programme is being launched in Delhi University, Jawaharlal Nehru University and Jamia Millia Islamia in Delhi. “An HIV positive person today can lead a relatively fuller life and the younger generation should be well aware of this fact. The programme is designed to help the students in any manner that they need,'' say officials.
India level Pepsi Series 2-2 with South Africa Monday, November 28, 2005 | MP
With a 5 wicket win in the fifth and final one-day international at the Mumbai Wankhede Stadium, India levelled the Pepsi Series against South Africa, 2-2. Chasing a target of 222 runs the Indian captain Dravid along with Yuvraj Singh made a 4th wicket stand of 79 runs which gave the Indian innings a strong hold. Dravid won the Man of the Match award. With this win, India levelled the series 2-2. Of the 5 ODIs, the Chennai match was abandoned due to heavy rains. Man of the Series award was jointly declared for Yuvraj Singh and South African skipper Graeme Smith.

President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam on his 2 day visit to assess the damage of the quake hit areas hailed the people of Kashmir for being brave and courageous on the face of calamity. Mr Kalam encouraged the people not to let the problems rule them. 'I would suggest that you master the problem rather than the problems being your masters.' Mr Kalam who visited the army base at Srinagar addressed the soldiers and praised them for guarding the borders of the nation and supporting the civilians. He also chose to sit with the jawans and ate food with them.

India government in a move to promote its Incredible India tourism campaign in the Middle East countries has given start to a massive tourism drive in Bahrain. Under the programme, India has launched a muli million dollar campaign in Bahrain jointly with India Tourism in Dubai and Bahrain Travel Alliance. The campaign is aimed at projecting India as a unique and favoured tourist destination of the world. This year has seen a 23% rise in the number of tourists from the Gulf and West Asian countries visiting India and officials look forward to give it a further boost with its new campaign which is mainly targeting the foreign tourists in these region.
Dayal satisfied with Committee’s cooperation Friday, November 25, 2005 | MP
The India government’s special envoy Virendra Dayal who is heading the inquiry committee for the fact findings on the Volcker report expressed satisfaction over the assistance extended to him by the Volcker Committee. He also claimed that he had received all essential documents he had required from the Committee. Mr Dayal on his week-long visit to the US had met Paul Volcker, the Committee chairman and also U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan. Mr Dayal didn’t disclose the nature of the documents but said that the findings on the documents would be reviewed by the Indian investigators before coming to any conclusions.

JD (U) leader Nitish Kumar has sworn in as the new Bihar Chief Minister today at a swearing-in ceremony held at the Gandhi Maiden in Patna. BJP’s Sushil Kumar Modi is the Deputy Chief Minister. The JD (U)-BJP combined NDA government has won 142 seats in the 243-member Assembly. Earlier Governor Buta Singh had invited Kumar to form the government after he staked his claim for forming the new government.
Dravid captain for test series against SL Wednesday, November 23, 2005 | MP
The national selection committee has appointed Rahul Dravid for the three Test series against Srilanka beginning on December 2. Dravid who is charge of the team has captained the Indian cricket team for the recent One-dayers against Sri Lanka and the ongoing series against South Africa is riding high on success in the ODI’s. The selectors were unanimous in their decision for announcing Dravid as the captain.

It will be soon a reality for the Indian consumers to make use of the Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) technology for watching TV programes of your choice in the benefit of your telephone line. This latest in broadband technology is being offered by a US-based firm, UT Starcom which will allow users to pause, fast forward and rewind live and recorded content stored on a remotely located server by the service provider. The firm is working out on pilot runs for the IPTV services and is expected to launch its IPTV services in India via telecom providers like BSNL, Reliance etc by December.
NDA leads in Bihar Assembly elections Tuesday, November 22, 2005 | MP
With the counting of votes in Bihar, the elections to the 243-member Bihar assembly shows a clear lead to the NDA with the combined JD (U)-BJP sweeping the majority of seats clearly indicating that the NDA would get over 140 seats. This had given an end to the RJD’s 15 years of ruling in the state. The RJD led by Lalu Prasad Yadav is said to be leading in 65 seats which is much less than the number they scored during the February elections. Meanwhile former CM and RJD candidate Rabri Devi had won from Raghopur defeating Satish Kumar of JD(U).

India will soon get on the 3G (third generation) cellular services which would enable high speed video and data connectivity on cell phones. Sources say that the 3G cellular services may be made available by the middle of next year. India may take up the IMT 2000 band for the 3G services instead of the choice of the US PCS (1900 MHz) band plan. The revising New Telecom Policy calls for at least 20 MHz in IMT 2000 band for 3G service which may likely undergo changes. The aspects on spectrum management are still being worked on.
Center seeks consent on Communal Violence Bill Monday, November 21, 2005 | MP
The Home Ministry at the Center is seeking consent on the communal violence bill before introducing it in the Parliament during the forthcoming winter session commencing on November 23rd. The Congress led government at the Center had assured that it would bring such a bill before the Parliament. The draft bill is being readied which the Home Ministry has prepared along with the help of Law Ministry. The bill will provide sentence to those engaged in communal disturbances and also compensation to the victims.
CAT 2005 results expected by first week of Jan Monday, November 21, 2005 | MP
Common Admission Test (CAT) -2005 results for admissions to the various Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) located in Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Kolkata, Indore, Lucknow and Kozhikode, will be declared in six weeks time. This was informed by the Director, IIM-Ahmedabad. The examination was held on Sunday at the various centers across the country with almost 1.70 lakh students appearing for it. The IIMs are expected to despatch the score cards by early January 2006. Experts say that this years CAT cut-offs will be lower than the last year and a score of 50-55 out of the total 150 would ensure an entry into one of the IIMs.The second phase of the test which has the interview and the group discussion round will be held from mid- February to March end.

With prices of gold shooting up to Rs 730 a gram over the week there are signals that demand for this metal could still go up further. The gold prices are on a high in the global market as well with the weakening dollar and peaking oil prices. These have made investors go for investing on other options like housing, gold etc. World prices for gold are expected to reach $500 an ounce by this year end. The Indian investment demand has been up 50% till September this year. Indians have bought 642 tonnes of gold till now which is more than the whole of last year.

It was India’s Irfan Pathan who shined with the ball as well as the bat in the India’s second match of the Pepsi ODI series against South Africa held at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore. Pathan who claimed 3 wickets and scored a crucial 37 runs batting at number three was chosen for the Man of the Match award. India made a six wicket win over the South Africans on Saturday thereby leveling the five match series at 1-1. The 3rd ODI will be played in Chennai on Tuesday, Nov 22.
Tsunami Early Warning System by 2007 Saturday, November 19, 2005 | MP
The Department of Ocean Development (DOD) is implementing the Tsunami Early Warning System project which will become operational by the year 2007. Studies reveal that the earthquakes at the geological faultlines in the Indian Ocean from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands to Sumatra in Indonesia or near Karachi could cause a Tsunami wave in the region. Tidal gauges are being installed at 40 locations across the Indian coastline and Andaman Islands to know the Tsunami direction. Tsunami warnings will be issued based on the mathematical modeling of the system prepared by the data that is being recorded at the Indian National Center for Information System.
No hike in interest rates: Chidambaram Saturday, November 19, 2005 | MP
Finance Minister P Chidambaram stated that there would be no increase in interest rates this fiscal. He hoped that the large banks will be able to maintain the current interest rates till March 2006 particularly for productive purposes which mean loans extended for plant, machinery, construction and import of capital goods needed for production. He also said that he didn’t visualize any hike in the interest rates for home loans too. On the mergers and acquisitions among banks he said that the initiative should come from the bigger banks.

With the ongoing summer placements in the various Indian Institute of Management (IIMs) in the country, many of the students from the B-schools have made it to foreign placements this year to cities including New York, London, Berlin, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Shanghai etc. The number of foreign acceptances in IIM-Ahmedabad, IIM-Bangalore & IIM-Kolkotta has already beaten the total number of foreign recruits last year. Foreign placements are offered stipends upto $7,000 (Rs 3.15 lakh) per month while the highest Indian offer is Rs 90,000 per month against last year’s Rs. 70,000. The most favoured jobs among students for this year’s summer placement were in investment banking. Other new sectors being offered were reinsurance, private equity, treasury, retail and hedge funds.

With the winter session of Parliament beginning on Nov 23rd, no possible additions to the Union cabinet is expected before the start of the session. However some minor reallocation of portfolios is likely to take place. There have been some vacancies in the Ministry but Congress sources say that reshuffle would be mainly limited to partymen. There are also speculations that the Prime Minister would continue to keep the External Affairs portfolio.

The Prime Minister has called on the SAARC members for a united fight against terrorism that is disturbing the region and warned that terrorism could put off investors from the region. He also said that no country could remain secure while its neighbouring country is harmed by terrorism. "We have a collective stake in ensuring peace and security in the SAARC region because no investor will come to this region if there is no assurance of peace and security”, said Mr Singh while addressing the SAARC Buisness leaders Conclave in New Delhi.

Motorolla has manufacturing plans for India. As a part of its manufacturing strategies, the company will locally assemble Motorolla C115 model handset in India. The C115 model priced at the range of Rs 2000 is meant for the Indian masses and will carry a ‘Made in India’ label, says Motorolla Business Corporate Vice President. The investment needed for the assembly was however not disclosed by the firm. Motorolla has recently entered into a starategic tie up with Bharati teletech to use their wide distribution and retail network.
Power sector facing serious problems: FM Thursday, November 17, 2005 | MP
Addressing the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit in Delhi, Finance Minister P Chidambaram maintained that the country’s power sector was facing the most intractable problems of the economy. This includes problem of payment system, serious coal and natural gas shortage, dispute resolution and power theft. The country losses 15 % of its generated power to theft. If power theft is reduced to 5 per cent, an additional 16,000 MW of power could be made available, he said. He also expressed concern over the low growth electricity generation and mining which has been affected by the extreme rainfalls this year.

India has committed over $ 8.6 million to the United Nations agencies towards development and humanitarian puposes for the next year. The various funds will include the UN Development Programme, World Food Programme, United Nations Children's fund and the UN Development Fund for Women. Besides this India has also pledged financial support to UN’s other agencies involved in the developmental activities.

This is the fourth year in run where India listed first with the number of international students studying in the US. The year 2004-05 recorded 80,000 students from India enrolled in the US universities. China stands in the second place while Korea, Japan and Canada get hold of the successive positions. SBI, TCS form new tech firm Tuesday, November 15, 2005 | MP
State Bank of India in a joint venture with Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. (TCS) is forming a new technology firm called C – Edge Technologies to provide technology solutions and domain consulting to banks and financial services sectors. TCS will hold 51% of stakes in the new company, while SBI will own 49 %. SBI has computerised its 13,600 branches and installed core banking network systems in more than 6,000 of them. TCS now focus on banking, insurance and financial services, which contribute $750 million of its annual revenues.
Additional paramilitary forces rushed to Bihar Tuesday, November 15, 2005 | MP
Alarmed over the naxallite attack in a jail in Jehanabad in Bihar, the Center had send additional forces including 1000 paramilitary forces to the State to bring the situation under control. The naxallites had freed over 380 inmates of the jail in the Sunday nights operation. Center will be providing 20 more battalions as the district authorities have asked for more assistance. The entire police force guarding the jail has been deployed for poll duty and hence only few men were in charge of the prison when hundreds of naxals attacked the jail.

Diabetes is becoming an epidemic in India which is showing an alarming rise in the number of people with this disorder, especially Type 2 diabetes. Reports show that the main reason behind this is the environmental factors related to the lifestyle leading to obesity which brings in higher risk for diabetes. To speed up the quake relief works and exchange of materials for the Oct 8th earth quake victims, India and Pakistan opened the fourth crossing point on the Line of Control in Mendhar sector of Poonch district. This is besides the already opened LoC points at Chakan-Da-Bagh, Kaman in Uri and Teetwal. This point between Mendhar in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir and Mirpur in PoK is operational through Roshini-Kanna outposts. This point across the Loc is being opened after 58 years since partition.

SAARC: Reconnect the subcontinent, says PM Sunday, November 13, 2005 | MP
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh addressing the SAARC nations at the opening ceremony of the Summit proposed on the need to reconnect the countries of the subcontinent to become a part of the dynamic Asia. He asked the South Asian countries to provide reciprocal transit facilities to connect to each other as well as the Gulf, Central Asia and South East regions. Mr Singh also proposed for the formation of a South Asian University with world class facilities for students in the region. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is in Dhaka to take part in the 13th SAARC Summit that begins today. The SAARC Summit will focus on terrorism, poverty and natural disaster management. Mr Singh will also hold bilateral meetings with other SAARC leaders of Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The Summit also hold significance as it may vote to allow Afghanistan in as SAARC's eighth member for the next session.
ISD rates go cheaper with Internet telephony Friday, November 11, 2005 | MP
The government has steered in Internet Telephony in the country giving way to cheaper International calls and also cut down the National Long Distance (NLD) and International Long Distance (ILD) entry/licence fees drastically. The annual licence fee for both NLD and ILD has come down from 15% to 6% of the annual gross revenue of the licensee. This will come into effect from January 1, 2006 which would give a major thrust to the telecom industry. Internet Telephony until now was not allowed in India. The new policy allows Access service providers to provide Internet telephony, Internet services and Broadband services.
Over 20% growth in tax revenues during Apr-Oct Friday, November 11, 2005 | MP
A rapid growth of over 20% in tax revenues were recorded during April-October this fiscal year. Total amount of collections added to Rs 1, 69,879 crore as against Rs 1, 41,259 crore in the previous year. It is said that the rise in income tax collections is credited to the Finance Ministry's tax campaign during October. The IT collection in October alone stood at Rs 4,398 crore against Rs 2,673 crore in the same month of last financial year.

An international educational exchange programme for students between the age of 15 and 18 has been launched by the American Field Service (AFS) for Indian students from this year onwards. AFS with its secondary school Youth Exchange and Study (YES) programme will be screening students for the scholarship programme in eight Indian cities across the country. These include Delhi, Ahmedabad, Pune, Mumbai, Jaipur, Chandigarh and Bangalore.The programme aimed to interchange culture is ideally for those students who have cleared the tenth grade. It offers a 1year residential programme where the student got to visit a foreign country and stay there with a host family while also attending to a local school there. This year 35 students have taken the exchange programme.

Former Indian President K R Narayanan died of renal failure on Wednesday at the Army Research and Referal Hospital in New Delhi. He was 84. President A P J Abdul Kalam and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh joined along with political leaders condoled the death of K R Narayanan and paid tributes to him describing him as an inspiring leader and a versatile personality who braved numerous hardships and overcame social prejudices during his lifetime. The government declared 7 day mourning on the demise of Narayanan.
Akshardham temple at Delhi opened for public Wednesday, November 9, 2005 | MP
The megha Akshardham temple complex is finally opened to the public from Tuesday. The temple which depicts the Hindu mythology and Indian culture promises to attract lakhs of tourists’ every year with its religious tourism. Build over an area of 100 acres on the banks of the Yamuna River, it took more than 2 years for construction and costed around Rs.2 billion, funded by millions of Bochasanvasi Aksharpurushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS) followers worldwide. The temple has 234 ornate pillars, 20,000 statues and many arches. Besides the Swaminarayan temple the complex consists of the main monument, exhibition halls, an IMAX theatre and a musical fountain, surrounded by a garden. It also got a restaurant modelled on the Ajanta and Ellora caves and an ayurvedic bazaar.
ISRO to launch Insat 4-A for DTH services Wednesday, November 9, 2005 | MP
India will launch its INSAT 4- A satellite by December middle, for direct-to home (DTH) services. ISRO will be launching this 3 tonne satellite set with high powered transponders 12C band and 12Ku band essential for direct-to-home broadcast services. Currently India is using foreign satellites for DTH services. Meanwhile work is also underway for an upgraded version of GSLV Marck III which will get readied for its first developmental flight by 2008.

Microsoft India has come up with a new tool for its entry into the lifecycle management space with Visual Studio Team System (VSTS). The new platform will help Indian developers create applications on a global basis that would help them increase their productivity. An automated solution- TeamBuild and the source code management system are included in the enterprise-ready development platform Visual Studio 2005. These integral parts of the VSTS product were developed by Microsoft’s Hyderabad unit.

Indian tennis star Sania Mirza has climbed to the 31st postion in the latest WTA player rankings. Ahead of the forthcoming Ministerial Conference, India firmly stressed that development must take up the focus during the WTO talks. Inquiry committee on Volcker report Monday, November 7, 2005 | MP
The Indian government had announced a probe into the findings of the Volcker panel and kept an independent inquiry committee headed by former diplomat Virendra Dayal for the fact findings. Dayal, as special envoy of the government, will mediate with the UN and its members to collect relevant materials. Meanwhile the Enforcement Directorate and Income Tax Department had already launched a similar probe.

According to PHDCCI, (Punjab, Haryana,& Delhi Chambers of Commerce & Industry) trade between India and Pakistan has shown significant rise with a 19% growth in the first 5 months, April- August of 2005-06. India’s exports to Pak has increased by 10% while the country’s imports from Pakistan has shown a massive 86% growth. India also marked a 17% growth in its trade with the SAARC countries during this period.
Center to go ahead with Indo-US air exercises Saturday, November 5, 2005 | MP
Amidst of protests from the Left parties, the Center government have decided to go forward with the Indo-US joint air exercises that are scheduled to begin from November 7th at the IAF base in Kalaikunda, Kolkota. The Cabinet Committee on Security meeting chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was held to review the situation and said that there was nothing new in the exercises that have been going on for the past few years.

Congress party President Sonia Gandhi held meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh again in the wake of the political controversy over the Volcker Committee report allegedly linking the party and the Union ministry. The Indian team clinched the seven match one day international series with a brilliant four wicket win in the fourth ODI against Srilanka at the Nehru Stadium in Pune. With this India had claimed the series 4-0 with four consecutive wins. India’s paceman Ajit Agarkar who picked up 5 wickets was declared the Man of the Match. Uri-Kaman post road on LoC opened Thursday, November 3, 2005 | MP
The Uri-Kaman post road connecting Srinagar and Muzaffarabad in PoK which has been blocked due to the landslides has been thrown open for light vehicles upto Kaman for sending relief material to the earthquake hit areas. This comes after the decision of the governments of India and Pakistan to open five identified points along the LoC for speeding up the quake relief operations. The road is expected to be made readied for heavy vehicles within 3 weeks time.

The Indian firms, Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC), the State Bank of India (SBI) were among the Indian companies that were listed in Forbes Global 2000 "corporate titans". The magazine which listed 2000 companies’ world wide included 30 Indian firms. The firms were ranked based on their performances in the last financial year. The Indian firms in lead were ONGC that ranked 265th position followed by SBI in 269th position and Indian Oil in 279th.
Newark-Delhi flight service launched Wednesday, November 2, 2005 | MP
The US based Continental Airlines has launched Newark- Delhi non- stop flight from Tuesday. This marks the introduction of non-stop flights between India and US for the first time. This flight service will bring down the travelling time between Newyork and Delhi by more than 2 and half hours. The Airlines in flight services include featuring Bollywood movies, Indian music and meals available in Indian veg, non-veg and Western menus.

The Center government assured that the country was safe from the deadly birdflu virus and also said that India was keeping a constant watch on the migratory birds reaching the various sacnturies across the nation. Testing of random samples of poultry and migratory birds were done and so far no cases of the H5NI avian influenza were reported in the country. The Animal Husbandry Department claimed that poultry and its products in India were absolutely safe for use. India had put a ban on the import of poultry products from the avian virus affected countries earlier in 2003; ever since then as a safety measure the ban remains on the many affected South-East Asian countries.
Dhoni’s big knock win the Jaipur ODI Tuesday, November 1, 2005 | MP
Young wicketkeeper Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s brilliant knock of 183 lead India beat Srilanka by 6 wickets in the third one-day international in Jaipur to take a 3-0 series lead in the seven match series. Dhoni’s unbeaten 183 included 10 sixes and 15 boundaries. Sri Lanka who won the toss and elected to bat made 298 runs in 50 overs with Kumara Sangakkara scoring his career best of 138. In reply India crossed the target of 299 in the 47th over with Dhoni finishing the match with a classic six. Dhoni won the Man of the Match award. The fourth one-dayer between the two teams will be played in Pune on November 3.
First Indian indigenous warship underway Tuesday, November 1, 2005 | MP
The country's first indigenously built anti-submarine warship with stealth technology is in progress by the Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Kolkata. The warship will be armed with stealth-mounted guns, the latest electronic warfare suite which, together with other key operational equipment, is shielded using stealth technology incorporated into the design of the bulwarks. GRSE plans to handover the ship to the Indian Navy by 2009 and is also working out on further orders from the Navy.
