Sania inspires Indian win over Australia in Hopman Cup
Thursday, 3 January, 2008
Perth, Jan 1 (ANI): Indian tennis star Sania Mirza's inspiring performance led India to a scintillating victory over Australia at the ongoing Hopman Cup tournament.
Sania and Rohan Bopanna defeated sixth seeded Australian duo of Alicia Molik and Peter Luczak 6-2, 4-6, 13-11 in the match tie breaker of the mixed doubles.
By defeating Australia, seventh seed India has kept their record of never losing a mixed doubles at the Hopman Cup.
After the singles, both Australia and India were levelled at 1-1 with Sania having defeated World No. 8 Molik 6-2, 2-6, 6-4, and luczak winning against 267th ranked Bopanna 7-6, 6-3.
The mixed doubles match turned out to be the nail biting match with the third set going for a tiebreak.
'Anything can happen in a mixed doubles, especially with this third set tiebreak. I think it was a very entertaining match," The Australian quoted Sania, as saying in the post match press conference.
India could still make the decider of the one million dollar tournament, but need to emphatically win their tie against the Czech republic and see the US comprehensively beaten by Australia.
With this defeat, Australia's chance to reach the final of the tournament has become bleak as Molik-Luczak duo has to overcome US superstar Serena Williams and her partner Mardy Fish on Thursday. (ANI) Labels: Sports

Selection committee to name India's new Test captain
Thursday, 8 November, 2007
Mohali, Nov 8 (ANI): The national selection committee will meet here later in the day to select India's new Test captain.
There are strong indications that the One Day International (ODI) and Twenty20 captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni may be handed the reins of the team in the longer version of the game as well.
It seems that Dhoni has now emerged as the frontrunner for the post after Sachin Tendulkar informed the cricket board that he was not keen on taking up the assignment.
The post of captain of the Indian Test cricket team has been vacant since Rahul Dravid quit the post two months ago.
Besides, the discussion will also hold on the issue of whether or not to recall Dravid, who was dropped for the first two matches against Pakistan owing to his loss of form against Australia.
The selectors, who are meeting during the second Indo-Pak ODI, will also announce team for the remaining three one-dayers against Pakistan.
The third ODI cricket match will be played between India and Pakistan at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur on November 11. (ANI) - AY Labels: Sports
India provisionally awarded to host 2010 World Cup Hockey
New Delhi, Nov 7 (ANI): India has been provisionally awarded the right to stage the 2010 men's World Cup hockey championship in its capital New Delhi.
The International Hockey Federation (FIH) announced on Wednesday that the federation's premier event, the 12th Men's Hockey World Cup, played by the 12 top nations, will in principle be staged in New Delhi over two weeks in February 2010 at the Major Dhyan Chand National Hockey Stadium.
International Hockey Federation (FIH) president Els van Breda Vriesman said on Wednesday that India has been asked to meet certain targets by March 2008 before the world governing body gives final confirmation. "Promoting hockey in India is crucial and I really call upon the positive attitude of the press in promoting the world cup which is so important for this sport in India. It is a happy day for India and this day is a happy day for International Hockey Federation too," said Vriesman.
The championship is seen as part of the FIH's bid to halt the slide at world level of the former eight-times Olympic champions India and also tap into country's booming economy for sponsors.
India recently won the Asia Cup hockey title in Chennai on September 09 defeating South Korea by 7-2.
Hockey is India's national game and the country notched eight Olympic titles, but the nation's cricket-crazy fans are quickly losing interest in the sport following two decades of failures in global hockey events.
Indian hockey has been in steady decline since the 1970s and 80s, coinciding with the game's switch to artificial turf with more emphasis on power, speed and accuracy than deft stick work.
The Hockey World Cup was first held in Barcelona, Spain in 1971, when Pakistan won the title. Since then the event has travelled to nine countries and seen five different winners hold the Cup aloft. India hosted the Men's Hockey World Cup in 1982 in Mumbai. (ANI) --MP Labels: Sports

India's new aggression will be tested during Australia tour: Ponting
Wednesday, 24 October, 2007
Sydney, Oct.23 (ANI): The Indian cricket team that will tour Australia in December and January can expect to face a tough time from their opponents and the crowd, said Australian skipper Ricky Ponting. Addressing a news conference here soon after the team's arrival from Mumbai, Ponting said Indian players had adopted a more confrontational attitude, and therefore, should expect to be paid back in the same coin. A string of visiting teams and players have realised that maintaining the intensity during a long summer tour can be quite a challenge. "They (the Indians) made it pretty clear right at the start of the series they were going to fight fire with fire, but for us, we know that's generally not the way they play their cricket," The Age quoted Ponting, as saying. "We've got a lot of cricket against them in the next few months, so it will be interesting to see just how long that aggressive-natured cricket does last from them." The Indians arrive in late December after a home series against Pakistan and have one three-day match in Australia, against Victoria, to prepare for the Boxing Day Test. By the end of January, they will have played four Tests before the caravan rolls into a triangular one-day series with Sri Lanka. NSW leg spinner Stuart MacGill, desperate to fill Shane Warne's large void this summer, echoed Ponting's theme. "It's always a danger if you're trying to become someone that you're not because you've got to concentrate on a whole lot of things out on the field, not just bowling," said MacGill. "It's always easier when you've got a lot of support at home to ride your emotions. They only need to look around and know they've got a billion countrymen supporting them. I think you'll find it doesn't work for them if they're pretending," he added. (ANI) Labels: Cricket, Sports
Players protest against militancy in Manipur
Imphal, Oct 22 (ANI): Upset with the constant extortion demands, sports officials and players want to root out nefarious elements from Manipur society. When Marykom of Manipur won the gold medal in the World Women's Boxing Championship in Delhi last year, she brought laurels for the country and Manipur in particular.
But the militants who claim to fight for Manipur's pride are actually killing the honour of the state by stifling the sports' authorities. These officials went on strike against the extortion demands served on them by an underground group. "We have told them that we don't have money. We are scarifying for our job only and for the achievement of our player. We are giving our effort to bring up our player to national and international level. Besides, they are demanding high amount," said, a sports official.
Sport stadiums and playgrounds, were empty. At a time, when the state players are preparing for next year's Asian games and Commonwealth Game, the sudden break in practice has been a big blow not only to the players but also for the state. "We are fighting for the future. We want to do some good for our state and for the country. We are practicing day and night. We don't have any option," said one of the players.
Another player added, "We have been affected a lot. Our daily playing session has been disturbed due to the demand by some groups." Last month, sports person and officials in Manipur also came out on the streets to protest against the harassment meted out by the underground groups. In the absence of large scale industries and adequate employment avenues, sports are the only area where talented youngsters find a living.
For Manipuris, sports are a means to socio economic upliftment, but the act as brakes on the ambitions and growth of the young generation. "If I don't pay the demand, I am not secure. As long as I pay the demand, I am secure," a player, said.
Manipur is a hub of sporting talents. Take any football club in the country and you will find five or six players who are Manipuris. The state today has the largest number of medal holders as the last two National games have proved. This strength in sports has come despite a lack of proper infrastructure. It's the sheer zest for the game and a desire to change their socio economic lives, that drive Manipuris but the underground groups want to put an end to this march to progress.
