 Delhi's Classical Connection... Two Day Annual SaMaPa Sangeet Sammelan 2008 organised!!!
In today's fast track music world there is certain section of the audience who still likes the traditional Indian Classical Music and always remains in search for such a programme fulfilled with contemporary traditional music. In the world of Indian Classical Music one of the most talked about programmes is SaMaPa Sangeet Sammelan, which has been a modern presentation fulfilled with glory, glamour and with jam packed auditorium, it creates buzz amongst the audience. Within the last three years SaMaPa Sangeet Sammelan has become one of the topmost and prestigious festivals of the country and a prestigious platform for the young talented musicians to present themselves along with the stalwarts of Indian Classical Music. The annual festival by SaMaPa was organised recently at Kamani Auditorium, New Delhi. The two day music and dance festival started with a Santoor recital by Abhay Rustum Sopori. He commenced his program with Raag Puriya Kalyan, followed by Aalaap-Joda, 10 and a half beat, ek taal, teen taal and concluded with Jhala. During his performance Abhay also performed a bandish 'Mohre Ghar Aaja...', and a tarana 'Deem Tana Dere Na...'. He was accompanied on Tabla by Sarit Das & Rafiuddin Sabri. After Abhay, Ustad Sabir Khan with his son Aarif Khan presented the heritage of Farrookabad Gharana on Tabla. The first evening ended with spell bounding Kathak-Bharatnatyam duet by Rajendra Gangani & Pratibha Prahlad. The second morning belonged to Santoor ensemble by 11 Santoor players led by Sh. Roshan Ali (disciple of Santoor legend Pt. Bhajan Sopori) followed by the Hindustani Gharana Gayaki - Vocal Gharanas of India by Dr. Ojesh Pratap Singh (Gwalior Gharana), Imran Khan (Dilli Gharana), Saurav Nahar (Banaras Gharana) & Nitin Sharma (Kirana Gharana) for the very first time 4 different gharanas of Indian Classical Music performed together. They presented different combinations of Raag Bhairav; 'Ahir Bhairav' (Imran), 'Nat Bhairav' (Saurav), 'Bairagi Bhairav' (Nitin) & Vaibhav Bahar (Ojesh Pratap), after that they all performed Raag Bhairav together. The morning session concluded with Sitar recital by Ustad Abdul Halim Jaffer Khan, it was like a gift for the audience as the varieties of Raag Bilawal were presented for the very first time. The second evening started with Shehnai-Violin duet by Pt. Rajendra Prasanna & Dr. Santosh Nahar followed by Hindustani vocal by Sunanda Sharma, disciple of Smt. Girija Devi. She performed Raag Purvi, Tappa & Thumri. The program ended with performance by Pt. Tejender Narayan Mazumdar on Sarod, he performed Raag Bageshree & Raag Hemant. During the two day program, for the outstanding achievements and contribution to Indian Classical Music renowned Sitar player Ustad Abdul Halim Jaffer Khan & renowned playback singer of South India P. Susheela were awarded the prestigious 'SaMaPa Vitasta Award 2008', while Ustad Ghulam Mohd. Saznawaz was awarded the prestigious 'SaMaPa Sher-e-Sheikh Mohd. Abdullah Award 2008'. To keep the interest of Music Critics alive this year SaMaPa introduced 'SaMaPa Critics Award', this year the award has been presented to Sr. Critics like Ravindra Misra & Pt. Vijay Shankar Mishra for their outstanding work in the field of Indian Classical Music while eminent vocalist Vidushi Susheela Rani Patel was felicitated for her contribution. Apart from this a short film of 10 minutes carrying the year long activities & contribution was also screened. The annual function saw the presence of who's who of various fields like Pavan Varma, M.M.S. Rao, S.C. Sehgal, Dr. U. Awasthi, M.M. Mathur, Jaffer Manhas, G. Jayalal, Smt. Shameem Azad, Rani Jethmalani, Shanno Khurana, Aruna Vasudev, Ustad Iqbal Ahmed Khan, Aslam Sabri, Ghulam Sadiq Khan, Ustad Rahim Fahimuddin Dagar, Pt. Suneel Mukherjee, Pt. Bhajan Sopori, Aparna Sopori and many others. SaMaPa is more than an academy and is a cultural movement aimed at propagating and popularizing Indian Classical and traditional music and other performing arts for which it is recognized on a global level. SaMaPa serves as a cultural bridge of the state of Jammu and Kashmir and rest of the country representing the heartbeat of J&K people and its culture.
