 A traditional and exclusive crafts and textile bazaar.... "Redefining our Past to Recreate our Future.."
Hast Karigar Society, a Delhi-based organisation of artisans from all over India, is currently organising a traditional and exclusive Craft and Textiles Exhibition at Aga Khan Hall, New Delhi. Entitled "Redefining Our Past to Recreate Our Future", the exhibition will continue till 5th December 2008. The exhibition was inaugurated by Mahavir Prashad Bondwal (National Awardee for Sandal Wood Carving), Dr. Bisheshwar Mishra (Director, Awart), Vijaya Bharti (Board Member, Hast Karigar Society) & Sarmistha (Secretary, Hast Karigar Society). In the exhibition some of the unique craft items are on display i.e. Bengal terracotta Pot, Manipuri black pottery, Rajasthan blue pottery, musical copper bells from Gujarat, the distinctive Manipuri jamdani fabric, walnut wood carving from Kashmir, traditional cool matting work (Shitalpati) from West Bengal and the unique Ghicha tussar from Jharkhand. Apart from these range of traditional paintings, pattachitras from West Bengal, Madhubani paintings from Bihar, Gadwal, Jamawar, Kancheepuram, Phoolkari, Chanderi, Pasmina, Kosa, Chettinad handloom products, block prints – Ajrak (Gujarat), Bagroo and Daboo (Rajasthan), Namda carpets from Kashmir, a range of avant garde jewellery in thread, beads from Rajasthan and in terracotta from West Bengal; and Kauna grass work from Manipur are also on display. Talking about the exhibition, Sarmistha (Secretary, Hast Karigar Society) said that through this exclusive exhibition we have tried to give opportunity to the artists from different parts of the country to enhance their marketing skills. We have almost 30 stalls by various artists from 15 states, which are exclusive and unique in their own way. Hast Karigar facilitates marketing, design development of the products of its member artisans and ensures social security of the artisans. In the present world scenario, where natural resources are fast depleting due to indiscriminate extraction and exploitation and the existence of our future generation is at stake, Hast Karigar Society and its members believe in sustainable economic production and livelihood where renewable resources are used and mechanization is regulated with the minimal use of non-renewable resources. The members of Hast Karigar Society have exhibited their products in all the big cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Pune, Bhopal and also in world cities like London, Tokyo, Switzerland, Los Angeles, Berlin, Sao Paulo, Paris, Taipe etc.
