For this purpose, Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan had launched "Together for Peace" a nation wide campaign against terrorism & violence on 18th of December 2008 to start the campaign of Together for Peace from 12 to 30 January 2009 by involving more than 80 lakh youth force of 2.68 lakh village based youth clubs/mahila mandalas all across the country. Youth Conventions, Lectures by eminent personalities, cultural programmes, candle lighting to pay homage to the Martyrs and pledge taking ceremony to fight against terrorism were the main highlights of the campaign.
Hundreds of youth from across the country joined hands in pledge to defeat the nefarious designs of those who would like to play with innocent lives and create a sense of despair. Together they have chalked out a national campaign - Youth for Peace to strengthen democratic, secular and pluralist character of our country. This nationwide campaign concluded today on Mahatma Gandhi's Martyrdom Day (January 30) and was launched by the rural youth in 500 districts. During the period, 500 district NYKS organized Seminars, Debates, Street Plays, Walks & Contact Programmes, Promoting plurality and togetherness. Youth Conventions were organized at district & state level respectively.
During the closing ceremony Dr. M.S. Gill, Sh. Salman Khurshid, Smt. Sindhusree Khullar, Dr. Shakeel Ahmed Khan, Sh. Amardeep Singh Cheema & many others were present there who addressed the youths and appealed them to follow the path shown by Bapu. The function also had various cultural programmes which was followed by the Voice of Gandhi. The programme concluded with One Minute Silence to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his death anniversary.
Earlier on 29th January the programme started off with the Lighting of Lamp to express Solidarity to Fight Against Terrorism & Violence followed by the welcome address and introduction of the campaign by Dr. Shakeel Ahmed Khan (DG, NYKS).
Addressing the youth Dr. M.S. Gill appealed everyone to come together to defend freedom secured by the selfless hundreds and thousands of martyrs. He said the youth of India owe it to all those who laid their lives for us. He appealed to join hands in celebrating plurality and togetherness to strengthen freedom and democracy.
