SaMaPa (Sopori Academy of Music And Performing Arts) has announced the name of the recipient of this year's prestigious 'SaMaPa Vitasta Award'. The award is being conferred upon the Tabla Maestro Padma Vibhushan Pt. Kishan Maharaj and the veteran music composer Sh. Khayyam. Pandit Kishan Maharaj is being awarded the 'SaMaPa Vitasta Award 2007' for his lifetime contribution in the field of Indian Classical Instrumental Music (Tabla). Sh. Khayyam is being honoured with the 'SaMaPa Vitasta Award 2007' for his lifetime contribution in the field of Music Direction. The award announcement was made by the youngest Sangeet Natak Akademi Awardee (Ust. Bismillah Khan Puraskar) - Santoor Maestro and Music Composer Abhay Rustum Sopori. Sopori said that the names were unanimously selected by Pandit Bhajan Sopori and the award selection committee. The award shall be presented on the occasion of 'SaMaPa Sangeet Sammelan 2007' in Delhi at Kamani Auditorium on the 1 st of December, 2007. The two day festival shall feature more than 75 performers. 'Vitasta', the ancient name of River Jehlum, symbolizes the cultural ethos of J&K State and 'SaMaPa Vitasta Award' has been instituted to honour the legendary musicians and musicologists of India who contribute significantly in propagating and preserving the cultural heritage of our country. The honour carries cash award of Rs. 50,000 each and is the first ever National Level honour pertaining to Kashmir given specially to the musical luminaries, every year, for their unparallel contribution. In the past two years the award has been conferred upon Smt. Girija Devi (vocal), Smt. Hema Malini (dance), Pt. Ramashrey Jha (vocal & musicology) and Smt. Shameem Azad (Kashmiri folk & light music). SaMaPa, under the aegis of its Chairman and President - the Santoor Legend and Composer Pandit Bhajan Sopori, has raised the level of music in J&K bringing it in the world music scenario. Pandit Sopori, hailed as the 'Pride of the State and Nation', has through his music highlighted the concept of oneness and foster unity enshrining the idea of national integration, humanism and peace amongst the common man and the youth in particular. SaMaPa is not merely an academy but a cultural movement aimed at propagating and popularizing Indian classical and traditional music with a focus on Jammu and Kashmir State for which it has been recognized on a global level. Young Santoor Maestro and Music Composer Abhay Sopori is a renowned name in the music industry and he's well known for his classical style of playing Santoor alike his father. Recently another look of Abhay Sopori came into scene when he made school children singing on his tunes during a concert, organised as the part of Spic Macay Virasat at Mayur Vihar based Janki Devi Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya. It was a pleasant morning for all the students, teachers and others as it was the first time such a programme was organised at school premises. Abhay Sopori started the programme with Raag 'Nat Bhairav', in which first he presented 'Alaap Jod' followed by Bandish 'Karam Karo Data' in Teen Taal, 'Ab To Maan Lo' in Ek Taal and ended with Drut Composition in Teen Taal. During the programme Sarit Das, Shraddha and Vipul Rao accompanied him on Tabla, Tanpura and Sur Santoor respectively. It was a great and worth watched moment when students begin singing on the tunes of Abhay. At first they were afraid but it was the sheer magic of Abhay's presence that turns them on. Once they started singing together the musical morning was at its best. Before the programme Mrs. Veena Sharma (Principal of JDSKV) welcomed the artists with bouquet and said till now we have listen and taught that Maa Saraswati lives everywhere in School but today we all have been blessed with her blessings in form of Abhay Ji.  Delhi witnessed glorious night of jazz featured by Maurizio Colonna & Frank Gambale A concert by Sandeep Chowta featuring Colonna & Gambale in association with Rain was organised by Siddarth R. Narayan in capital recently. This bash of jazz by Maurizio Colonna & Frank Gambale mesmerised the distinguished audience at Hotel Le Meridien for more than an hour. It's been a decade since Sandeep Chowta stormed the Indian music scene. And ever since, he has continued to enthral us with some spectacularly distinct compositions. His music for movies like Satya, Jungle, Company, Dum, Mast, Musafir and Ashoka is a firm testament to this fact. How ever, few of us know Sandeep as one of the prominent exponents of jazz music in the country. His deep love for jazz has seen him collaborate with international big wigs like John Scofield, Virgil Donati, Dave Valentin and others. It is to his credit that the Indian Audience will witness the likes of Gambale and Colonna perform in the flesh. And as the accomplished music composer puts it...this is only the beginning. Maurizio Colonna, born in Turin, is unanimously considered one of the greatest classical guitar players of our time. He is unanimously considered as one of the greatest classical guitar players of our time. Its eclectic artistic life sees him as author of: historical-musical books and guitar-playing technique (F. Muzzio Ed.) which can be found in the libraries of the most important European and American Universities; of guitar compositions for guitar. Among the many awards given to the artist we would like to mention the Special Prize, conferred by the Italian National Agency for the Show Business, in occasion of the IX° Soundtrack Festival (Rome, 23 July 1991) and the International Show Business Prize - Fiuggi 1991 (Music section), conferred during the show Fiuggi Platea Europe. Frank Gambale, born and grown in Canberra (Australia), began playing guitar when he was just seven years old. He has been influenced in his style by Jimi Hendrix, John Mayall / Eric Clapton, and by Jerry Garcia's Grateful Dead. At the age of 13 he discovered Chick Corea and Steely Dan, and the Brecker Brothers which began his love for Jazz music. Gambale decided to leave his country to study guitar at the Guitar Institute of Technology (GIT), Hollywood, USA. There, he graduated with the "Student of the Year" Award and is offered a teaching job which he accepted and kept for four years. During these years, Gambale played in Los Angeles Jazz circuit with his group and published his first book of guitar technique, "Speed Picking" (Hal Leonard Publishing). "This is our first performance in India; we were very much excited to come to here but never expected such a response for classical guitar, we are really very happy to see that our performance gave lot of merriment to the audience. We would like to come here again and again to perform and to experience this overwhelming response from Indians again and again" says this musical duo. And the budding guitar players were in queue to get their guitars autographed by the Gods of Guitars. "Today, in International Arena music emerged as universal and has no precincts. Artists are acclaiming internationally by the audiences & listeners. Indian Audiences have always shown their interest and cascaded appreciations for real talent. This is a just beginning there are more concerts in pipeline" says Sandeep Chowta, who is all set to make up an international band in December this year (name will be revealed soon). Recently famous singer Anwar [Anwar Hussein] was in Delhi for the promotion of his new album "TOHFA" which is a compilation of 8 songs among which two songs "Hum Se Ka Bhool Hui", "Teri Aankon Ki Chahat Mein" from film "Janta Hawaldar" and "Mohabbat Ab Tijarath Ban Gai Hai" from "Arpan" were very popular songs, these songs are remixed by Siddharth and music programming is done by Liyaqat Ajmeri plus six new songs with lyricists Katil Shifai, Music by Musafir, and Rendered by Anwar. This album is produced under the banner of J. M. Productions releasing on Ocean Records. He sang in many famous films like Nazar Se Phool Chunti Hai (Film: Ahista Ahista in 1981), Mohabbat Ab Tijarat (Film: Arpan, starring Jitendra), Rab Ne Banaya Mujhe Tere Liye (Film: Heer Ranjha in 1992, starring Anil Kapoor), Zindagi Imtihan Leti hai (Film: Naseeb, starring Amitabh Bhachan), Hathon Ki Chand Lakiron Ka (Film: Vidhata, starring Dilip Kumar), Shair Bana Diya (Film: Yeh Ishq Nahin Ahsaan, starring Rishi Kapoor) and many more. Hence Anwar started getting work and recognition. Since last 15 years he was busy in various shows all over world. Anwar has made videos for all the eight songs in this album. The Santoor Legend and Music Composer Pandit Bhajan Sopori has been honoured with the highest civilian award of the State of Jammu and Kashmir by the Hon'ble Governor S.K. Sinha and Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad for his lifetime dedication and contribution to the Jammu and Kashmir State at a function organized at SKICC Auditorium, Srinagar by Govt. of J&K. Pandit Bhajan Sopori's has single handedly carried the culture and music of the State of Jammu and Kashmir on his shoulders, in not just taking it to international heights but even providing a respectable status in the Valley, due to his diligent and untiring efforts in nurturing the spirit across generations. The honour is in recognition of his lifetime service. Pandit Bhajan Sopori is heralded as not just the 'pride of the State of Jammu and Kashmir' and also the 'pride of the country'. The mystic master has been the pioneer in establishing the Santoor on national and international platforms and has come long way since he created history by being the first person to play the Indian Classical music on the Santoor way back in the early 1950s. In his five decades of dedicated work he has explored various dimensions of the Santoor, carrying out many path-breaking innovations for which he is hailed as the 'Saint of Santoor' and the 'King of Strings'. He has formally established the only authentic style of playing the classical Santoor known as the 'Sopori Baaj'. A composer of almost 5000 songs in various languages, Pandit Bhajan Sopori has used his Santoor and his compositions to highlight the concept of oneness and foster unity enshrining the idea of national integration, humanism and peace. His recitals and compositions bear the distinctive stamp of his virtuosity and erudition. The quiet and unassuming maestro is the bearer of the rich musical legacy of the fabled 'Sufiana Gharana' of Kashmir, the exclusive Santoor family of the country. In fact what Sopori family has given to the world of music is the instrument Santoor. For his contribution, he has received numerous awards and honours. A Jugalbandi of Classical Music and Kathak left Delhiites spellbound...

Recently a musical evening 'Shringar' was organised by Facets at India Habitat Centre where the Jugalbandi of Classical Music and Kathak by Sunanda Sharma (Sr. Disciple of Girija Devi) and Saswati Sen (Sr. Disciple of Pt. Birju Maharaj) created magical waves and left Delhiites spellbound. The evening started with stupendous solo performance by Saswati Sen, seeing her performance everyone was amazed with her skills and training that she has been receiving from Pt. Birju Maharaj. He was feeling very proud during the evening as his disciple was at her best. After Saswati Sen, it was left to Sunanda Sharma to continue the magic of classical music and she was also at her musical best. She started her performance with Raga Purvi, 'aayo bhanwro ras le gayo maai…' in bara khayal. She made her presence felt with another evening of brilliance. But it was not enough for Delhiites as they anxiously waited for the moment of Jugalbandi by two of the most prominent classical artists and soon the moment arrived as the history was re-written on the stage. It all belonged to Sur-Laya-Taal of Sunanda Sharma and the magical adaa and abhinaya of Saswati Sen, enjoyed by each and every single person present there. The Jugalbandi started with a thumri in raga Misra Khamaj, 'chhavi dikhla ja saawaria dhyan lago mohe tera…' followed by a Kajri, 'kahanwa mano o radha rani…' and the finale was a Holi, 'rang darungi nand ke lalan pe…'. On this occasion Pt. Birju Maharaj, Rajan Mishra, Ritesh Mishra, Alka Singh (founder Facets), renowned painter Sanjay Bhattacharya & singer Meeta Pandit were spotted enjoying one of the unforgettable evenings of Indian Classical Music and Dance. Alka Singh was pleased with the feedback of the audience. She said, 'Facets' is an organisation engaged in promotion of arts, crafts and music, In particular, the organisation seeks to locate talented artists, craftsmen and performers in different fields and to provide them with a creative ambience for them to display their skills, interact with discerning audiences, members of the media and public. During these years, Gambale played in Los Angeles Jazz circuit with his group and published his first book of guitar technique, "Speed Picking" (Hal Leonard Publishing). "This is our first performance in India; we were very much excited to come to here but never expected such a response for classical guitar, we are really very happy to see that our performance gave lot of merriment to the audience. We would like to come here again and again to perform and to experience this overwhelming response from Indians again and again" says this musical duo. And the budding guitar players were in queue to get their guitars autographed by the Gods of Guitars. "Today, in International Arena music emerged as universal and has no precincts. Artists are acclaiming internationally by the audiences & listeners. Indian Audiences have always shown their interest and cascaded appreciations for real talent. This is a just beginning there are more concerts in pipeline" says Sandeep Chowta, who is all set to make up an international band in December this year (name will be revealed soon). According to Ramayan there was a Pushpak Viman (Flowery Plane) and that was meant to carry Rama from Lanka to Ayodya along with his nears and dears, in that there will be always a room for another person, though it seems fully occupied, same as this flowery plan, every musician who works hard and who dedicate him self to produce quality music will always has a special place in the hearts of Music Lovers. Recently an evening was organized by Sopori Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Capital at India Habitat Centre, Stein Auditorium. This is the first ever festival featuring just the senior musicians. On this eve the main focus was to highlight the traditional Gharana system. Sa Ma Pa is not just a music academy but a cultural movement with a focus on the youth. The Motto of Sa Ma Pa is "Jan Jan Tak Sangeet"- Music to the masses. Sa Ma Pa (Sopori Academy of Music And Performing Arts) presented this festival titled 'SaMaPa Sangeet Vibhuti' to feature some of the legends of Indian music. This evening experienced Musical aroma of different Gharanas with vocal and instrumental performances by the legends of Music world. The evening began with 'Saraswati Vandana'. Performances started with magical Rag Bhopali by Ustad Rahim Fahimuddin Dagar (Dhrupad) he accompanied by Sunil Kumar on Tanpura & Vijay Kumar and on Pakhawaj Dal Chand Sharma and continued with Ustad Faiyaz Khan's Tabla performance that enthralled the audiences with thumping beats of Tabla along with Asif Ali Khan (Sarangi), Emran Khan (Tabla). Later Pandit Vidyadhar Vyas (Vocal) filled the entire environment with the fragrance of melody, Prasoon Chatterjee added some more flavor to this performance with his Tabla. Other than performers other guests who present at the evening were, Mr. Narbi Moukhariq- Ambassador of Morocco, Mr. Severyn Kharchuk- councilor of Ukraine Embassy, Padamashri Pt.Bhajan Sopori, Aparna Sopori etc. The vision of Sa Ma Pa, under the aegis of its Chairman and President Padmashri Pandit Bhajan Sopori, the Legendary Santoor Maestro and Music Composer, is to be a world class centre of excellence in the teaching and propagation of Indian classical and traditional music and performing arts. The young Santoor Maestro and Music Composer Abhay Rustum Sopori, who also happens to be the youngest recipient of the 'Sangeet Natak Academy Award' (Us. A Musical evening with the legends of music world….An evening At Stein Auditorium, India Habitat Centre,Lodi Road, New Delhi brought the music legends on single stage. This musical evening started with Saraswati Vandana. Anchor Sadhna Srivastav started the event by facilitating the entire guests. Performances started with Shanno Khurana's vocal along with her team mate Vinod Pathak on Tabla and Bharat Bhushan Goswami on Sarangi and continued with the Rudra Veena performance by Asad Ali Khan along with Veethika Tikoo on Tanpura and Pandit Dal Chand Sharma on Mridang. Audiences enjoyed the remarkable & melodious Performances. Other glittering stars from music world present at this event were Rajendra Prasad Prasana (Flute Maestro), Abhay Rustam Sopori (Musician and Composer), Gullam Mustafa Khan (Vocal), Fahmuddin Dagar (Vocal), Vijay Shankar Mishra (Tabla), Ustad Fayyaz Khan (Tabla) and Kamal Modi. In presence of Chief Guest Shri Jugal Kishore (Rural Development Minister of J&K). Speaking to media Shri Jugal Kishore said, terrorism activities has become very less as youth in Jammu & Kashmir are spending their time in Cultural & Classical activities.
