FAQ

What is My-India Webring?

  • The My-India (My-India) Webring is a well-established webring of some hundreds of Indian sites.
  • My-India Webring group India related homepages together in a "ring".
  • Each site is a link in the big chain of Indian site
  • A My-India Navigation Control Palette placed on each member page allow you to move from one member site to the next, allowing one to (eventually) traverse the entire ring and end up where they started.
  • By surfing through the Ring, you will see a massive showcase of talent and a tremendous variety of India related sites. Whatever your surfing pleasure, there is bound to be something for you.
  • Once we accept your membership, then your page will be added as a link in a big chain of Indian homepages structured in a circular fashion and your site will be inter-connected to other pages through the My-India Navigation Control Palette.

How does My-India Ring work?

A fragment of HTML code (My-India Navigation Palette) inserted in each member page is the connecting link between all the member pages. Once you add the html fragment given to you while you register, you will find a navigation palette in your page. This palette act as the control center for navigation and controls the journey from one member page to another in a circular fashion. In essence, the links on each site in the ring provide a means for the webring database to know what site the user is coming from, and where they want to go. (ie, next site, prev site, etc....)

By having the proper information on each site (site id#) the database then checks to see which "My-India" site is next in line. When the user clicks on one of these links, webring will search the database for the proper information and then send the user to the url of the next site in the ring.

What do I get when I join The My-India Ring?

Well, it's quite simple, actually. You get exposure to your website. Every time someone clicks on the next, previous, etc. buttons on someone's page, they will end up on your page eventually. This will greatly increase the amount of exposure to your site.  Moreover, the surfing audience of My-India Ring are predominantly Indians. Addition of your site to the ring help you to showcase your site to other Indians and people interested in Indian Sites.

How can I submit my page to the My-India Ring?

All you have to do is simply fill in the form shown at Sign-up page to be placed in the queue. Once in the queue, which is a waiting area, you will be given the opportunity to copy the customized HTML code for your site. You will also receive a copy of the ring HTML fragment by e-mail. Open your html file (index.shtml, main.shtml or whatever you have registered) using a text editor (note pad, wordpad, textpad or a simple DOS Editor will do) and paste the lines of code we had send you by e-mail somewhere at the bottom in your html file.

Sites will not be accepted into the actual ring until the HTMl code (My-India Navigation Control Palette) is inserted (appear) somewhere on your linked page within 15 minutes of submission. Until we add the site to the ring, you will not receive any traffic from the My-India Ring.

There's really no extra work or effort for you. Once you have been accepted into the ring, there's nothing else to do to maintain your membership other than keep the My-India Code Palette on your page. The ring will do the rest for you!

Show me the My-India Navigation Control Palette to be placed in my page?

The following is a typical sample of My-India palette to be placed in your page.   The code for your site are e-mailed to you when you register based on your site Number. For example, the following code is for Site No:1

<<< Previous * Random * Next >>>
An Indian Ring Site
Member Index * Directory * Messages * more..

Can I use a given code for my other page?

No!. Because the code is generated for each page address based on an allotted ID number. All the navigational links in the My-India Navigational Control Palette is based on the allotted ID. So if you have a different pages with a different individual content, you should register that page address separately and should get the code for that page.

I lost the HTML code given to me. How can I get the HTML code?

Register again and get the new code.

How can I surf the My-India Ring?

To navigate the Ring, look for the My-India Navigation Control Palette on all member sites. Use the navigational links (next, previous, random, etc.) in the palette to surf the Ring.

To start surfing the My-India Ring all you need to do is click any of these links.

  • Previous: This link will take you to the previous site in the Ring. This is similar to the back button in your browser.
  • Next: This link will skip to the next/previous site in the Ring.
  • Random: This link will take you to sites randomly in the Ring. Feeling adventurous? Give it a try!

Who take care of the ring and how do you ensure that all member pages have the My-India Navigation Palette

Interesting question... Indian pages are scattered all around the net in thousands. We get a large number of submission every day. We accept only about half of them to the ring as mostly half of the site owners violate our rules and could not complete all the steps required for submission. Our team members do an excellent job to keep the ring intact and periodically review the sites queued up in the ring. We have a team of volunteer assistants who help to manage the ring.

I am a member at My-India Ring.  But recently I got a warning about the incorrectness of the code.  Why?

The top reasons why sites are failing and hence getting warning message from the My-India Ring.

  1. Page does not exist - Normally results when a url is entered incorrectly, or a site moves.
  2. Page cannot be retrieved - Happens when a server "times out". Often re-checking a site results in passing the check.
  3. Page exists, but no fragment exists on the page listed in the Ring file (read What is a Valid Fragment, below).
  4. Page exists, fragment exists, but some part of the fragment is invalid. Most often the Site ID is wrong. Another cause is that the fragment does not match the custom fragment the Ring uses.
  5. The registered URL is not the actual URL, rather a redirect URL.  It applies to all re-direct URLs.

What is a Valid Fragment (My-India Palette)?

Here is the current policy on what the My-India Checker is looking for in our Ring fragments pasted in our member pages:

  1. My-India Ring member sites should have a My-India Palette with links  Prev, Next, and Random so that the ring can be navigated as a ring (i.e., go around it).
  2. My-India Palette should contain the link Random  in order to allow traffic to go randomly (i.e., let surfers get to WebRing).
  3. My-IndiaPalette should be placed on the page that a surfer arrives at when they use a Ring navigation palette. This is so that a surfer doesn't have to search for the navigation palette when they get to a site. They can peruse the site, or move on with minimal effort.
  4. The registered URL should be the complete actual URL with the page name included.

In order to "encourage" the above, the My-India Checker is geared to examine for the above criteria as a minimum standard.

Having said that, we are well aware of the practice of putting fragments on a "WebRing(s)" link page. We do not allow such a practice.   All member sites should have the My-India Navigation palette at the registered URL.  Members with failing or incorrect code will be warned three times and then moved into queue and after a short duration, will be deleted from our database.
